Some white southern DUers defend the Confederacy, though of course none of them endorse slavery, and I do understand that and don't blame them for it. I honestly don't mean for this to be an attack on them, or indeed on the Confederacy itself. The genuine Southern Confederacy of 1860-1865 had absolutely nothing to do with this image.

I wish the "Fergit Hell, The South Will Rise Again" folks had left Jeanne d'Arc out of their propaganda, though, particularly since they are probably pleased now to sneer at the French as "cowards" and "cheese eating surrender monkeys"; and in fact would have been the ones running from her at Orleans or Patay.

7. Yes, absolutely... as I said, though, they DON'T defend slavery

but they do feel that the South should have been let to depart in peace, that most Southerns fought for reasons that had nothing to do with slavery, that Lincoln and Sherman were war criminals, and that the Union's military response to the Confederate firing on Fort Sumter was an act of aggression.

I disagree with their point of view, but I do not condemn them for it. They certainly have a right to be proud Southerners and to be proud of their regional history. Even if I had the power to do so I would never dream of taking that away from them. And, I must admit, some of their observations about the Union have a greater degree of truth than the "common knowledge" on that war we Northerners have all picked up.

or at least you haven't read them all closely, or you'd know better; and therefore it's a little silly for you to work yourself up into such self-righteous high dudgeon. Start paying more attention to the Civil War and "Southern" threads from now on.

As for my "game", I can tell you exactly what it is. I've been accused of "Southern Bashing" for some of my comments in earlier threads. Please do feel free to look them up if you like. Because of that I now try to distinguish between the historical Southern Confederacy, the Neoconfederate nutjobs who dress up and write for web sites like www.southerncaucus.org, and white Southern DUers who are perfectly wonderful people but who are a little sensitive about, as they perceive it, the criticism all things Southern get here when some of these hot-button issues come up.

But from now on I'll be glad to personally notify you every time I come across a poster making one of these comments. Would that make you happy?

It's "southern-bashing" to criticize the Confederacy or identify the confederate battle flag with racism. Yet when I try to show some respect for those same peoples' opinions, lest I be accused of being "anti-southern", I'm still "anti-southern".
