Poll question: Is Coldplay the next U2?
I consider U2 to be the greatest band to come out of the 80's ... hands down. Yes, they put out some clunkers (Zooropa, anyone?) but "The Unforgettable Fire" is one of the greatest albums of all time. I've been waiting for a group to be a worthy successor to U2 and become the next next Beatles. I believe Coldplay is that group. Discuss ...

2. Haven't heard the first album(s?), but..
I can count the number of good songs on A Rush of Blood to the Head on two fingers.

3. If Nothing Else, Different Career Track
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 11:09 AM by Crisco
U2:

Got virtually no airplay or press until their 3rd album came out. Initial fans were drawn by their own curiosity.

Didn't sound like anyone else we'd already heard.

Coldplay:

Got major airplay and press with their major label debut.

Sound like Catherine Wheel + Radiohead.

Actually, Radiohead *could* be the next U2, if they wanted to be. But I don't think they want to.

6. Fuck no. Radiohead if anyone.
But they had that chance after The Bends and the band (well, mainly Thom York) wigged out because of their newfound star status.

A big part of U2's popularity and/or legend are their live shows. They've always been fucking amazing. Doesn't matter what kid of venue they play, they'll always be fucking amazing. Although I had high hopes for Coldplay, I was very disappointed in the concert I saw.

5. Coldplay do suck quite hard.
I'm sure if I listened to the album some more, I'd find one perfect moment where they were all playing in the same key for a brief second, but why subject myself to that punishment?

They don't suck as hard as The Streets, of course, but that's a whole other story.

7. Hopefully they'll put out weird albums too.
See I liked U2 a lot lot better when they put out Achtung Baby and Zooropa.

8. I liked those too.
So far, I have enjoyed watching U2 go through all their different incarnations.

But Coldplay will never get that far. It doesn't feel the same.

9. U2 is one of the most overrated bands in history in my book
They're ok at best, slightly better than Coldplay, which is tolerable.

12. Wow!
My original question was going to ask if they were the next U2 or the next Oasis--Oasis had so goddam much talent and look where they are now.

14. H-E-L-L--N-O-!
They are definitely NOT the 'next U2' they are very good, no doubt, but are not yet the massive limitless talent that U2 is and always will be.
