How would an AIM DU chat room sound?
I was just wondering if anyone would be up for an AOL Instant Messenger chat room where we could discuss much of the same stuff that's discussed here. As an accompaniment to the forum, it would allow us to be more formal with one another. We could name it something along the lines of DUchat (just an idea, if anyone has a better name, please respond) and anyone who wanted to chat could just invite themselves to it on AIM.

If the MODs think that this would in any way hurt traffic at this site or disapprove of it for any reason, feel free to delete this thread. Also this may have been done in the past and been abandoned for whatever reason or one may already exist. I'm relatively new so I don't have a clue. I've just been a part of other forums that also have an AOL chat and I've discovered that it helps the forum while making discussion more lively and friendly. So....responses anyone?

2. Yahoo Group?
How about a Yahoo or MSN group? They're free to open, and the owner/moderators can control who's let into the group. Both offer chat rooms.

Better yet, perhaps we can get a chat room going on this site??????

3. How about a real chat room?
Perhaps an IRC chatroom.

We can do better than AIM

6. That could work.
You'd probably have to educate a few of us computer-illiterates on IRC though. I was just thinking AIM because it's incredibly simple to start up a chat.

7. If DU did it right, they could setup a simple web based client
for those who dont feel comfortable getting some of the many IRC programs available for free.

4. Also...
a chat on another messenger program would be fine too. Whatever most DUers use, I guess. I will probably wait until I get a MODs approval, just so that I don't step on anyone's toes.

8. We've been doing one off and on for almost 3 years
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 02:06 AM by ZombyWoof
We used to have a regular name for it, but a flaky DUer made the mistake of posting it publically one night, and it was one freeper troll after another.

Then once we settled on a new name (of my own choosing) about 2 years ago, again, another leak (a well-meaning DUer trusting every PM he got asking for the name), AND too many fucking teenagers with nothing to say but 'wassup' and 'w00t!, complaining about school, parents, etc.

So good luck, but I have done my time trying to organize a regular AIM chat. Make it adults only for your sanity.

Plus expect flames from people extolling the equally crappy ICQ, MSN, or Yahoo Chats. They all suck, people.

On edit: The chats were always announced in the Lounge.

11. Never thought about that!
I forgot about those darn trolls.

Well, as a poster mentioned above, we could have a chat where the moderator could decide who could and couldn't join. I'm not sure how it works but that sounds plausible.

14. and they are OVERT trolls
Which is far worse than you normally see in here.

Also, if you have ANY suggestion that involves DU's mods or DU-related activity, please take it to the Ask The Administrators Forum, not in here.

15. A real chat would need to be moderated 24/7,
it would take work, but its doable

19. Yep... That Weird Fellow... I Remember Him
w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t!

Oh. My. God... I couldn't click the ignore button fast enough. Those teens are pretty much why I stopped visiting the DU chat room. I felt like I was babysitting.

13. I don't understand. Do you mean the posters?
Or are you referring to people who would visit on special occasions? I would assume that it would just be the people who post here already visiting the chat normally. Just imagine, watching one of the rare Bush press conferences in unison while dissecting it line by line in the chatroom. Or better yet, a show on FNC.

17. We have had one for a long time...and actually a few more
the original one was invitation only and then bookmarked to anyone could go anytime, but somehow a few freeps got on the invite list and apparently they polluted it.. and then a new one was started..It's quite easy..and as long as people invite "trustworthy" people, and do not post their private information, anyone can start one and have people drop in.:)

18. JohnKleeb has chat sessions often
PM him or watch for his threads in the lounge. I think he uses AIM (yuck!).

Me, I'm not a chat kind of guy. I don't type fast enough, and I tend to prefer long-windedness.
