Anyone Have a Low Calorie Recipe?
I'm trying to lose 12 pounds----gained 15 pounds this year. Went up from 100 to 115, and I can't fit into my size 1 jeans anymore so I had to buy more jeans in a size 2.

So I'm looking to reduce my calorie intake, and I would love any low-calorie recipes that can help me do that.

3. Eat more lean meats and more steamed veggies... plain diet...
You'll eat more and lose weight in the process.

I lost 15 pounds in 2 months, so far. I'm taking a small break as I've been getting fatigued lately and discovered I'd eaten too few calories per day (which is dangerous and can lead to a rebound).

Winter Blend (cauliflower and broccoli florets)

or

California blend (see Winter Blend plus add carrots.) Carrots are questionable by the Atkins' diet, but there aren't many in a package and they contain lots of vitamin A.

I usually eat 1lb or 2lbs per day. I try to find the cheapest and stock up... name-brand bags don't interest me and they're no better than geenric store-brand.

Apart from raw, steamed way is by far the best way to prepare veggies as they retain most of their nutrients.

Do not EVER microwave veggies, that makes their nutritional value next to worthless.

I also snack on water chestnuts or tuna throughout the day, particularly when I start feeling woozy/tired. A greater amount of smaller meals per day is far better than two or three gigantic meals with nothing inbetween.

I do take in some grains (whole, unbleached wheat only) for complex carbs, but it's all done in moderation.

14. More on Steaming, SW
If you have a wok, a great addition is a bamboo steamer. You can put veggies, chicken cubes, all sorts of things in there. Excellent way to get delicious food without sauteeing/stirfrying in oil.

7. Hey, Slinkerwink.
I don't have recipes, but can direct you to an invaluable resource: http://www.calorieking.com CK is a tremendous help to me these days.

I can make one suggestion: if you eat eggs, try egg white only. The easiest way to cook them (I think) without adding a lot of fat calories: in the microwave. Pour a couple of drops of olive oil in a bowl or big mug & use it to coat the cooking surface. Put in your whites, beat with a fork, and "zap" in 20 second intervals, beating in between "zaps." They'll take 3-4 20-sec. sets to cook. Eat them plain or pre-cook some veggies and veggy sausage to scramble in.

You can get a great deal of protien with very few calories by using egg whites. (If you don't want to waste yolks, you can get egg whites in pint cartons. They're next to the egg substitutes.)

Best wishes & luck. :bounce:

8. Slink, I hate to tell you this, but lo-cal is a scam
It doesn't work.

It starves your body, then after a matter of time you're craving higher cal foods and you've defeated he whole purpose.

What you need to do is eat. Eat smaller portions, about fist sized, more frequently.

Get plenty of exercise, sleep and drink lots and lots of water.

Stay away from caffeine, since it helps to retain water.

Sorry to butt in, but I couldn't help it.

9. Not recipes, but a couple of tips. Consider a general diet approach.
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 12:00 PM by MissMarple
If you order salads always get the dressing on the side. And the more color in your salads the better they are for you. Limit refined carbs like chips and cookies. Whole grain products are best. Sara Lee makes a pretty good low carb bread. Plan ahead and have healthy snacks ready for when you get the munchies. Any calories from alchoholic beverages will cling like mad to your body. I hate that part. White wine is my downfall. Good luck. You are a college student? My daughter gained 10 pounds when she was a freshman. It came off, and she now knows more about nutriton than I did at her age.

Consider a multivitamin. :D Good luck.

Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 12:08 PM by prolesunited
you need to weigh 100 pounds and fit into a size 1? Perhaps you should consider keeping those few pounds to round out your frame. Women are meant to have curves.

Just a thought.

17. I'm very short, about 5"1, so those extra pounds make me look
overweight where I can't fit into the clothes I used to fit into before. You see, I'm very small and those curves just make me look out of proportion. I'm not anorexic or bulimic, just guilty of eating too much food during exams, lol.

My freshman year, I was on the crew team, and I was very muscular. Those muscles have reverted back to soft curves which look out of proportion on me. For instance, my stomach hangs out over my size 1 pants if I try to wear them, and the top parts of my shoulders kind of strain the shirts I have.

I'm going back to exercizing and eating in much smaller proportions now so I can go back to my old weight.

13. Are you vegetarian? If not...
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 12:32 PM by WillyBrandt
This isn't much of a recipe, but it works.

Take a chicken breast, and marinate it in Mojo and Adobe seasoning for 30 minutes. Bake for 30 minutes at about 375 - 400. Eat.

Tastes quite good, and a chicken breast has very low caloric content, especially given the "fullness" it offers. Also, it will assure that you don't lose protein as you try to slim down again. This is EXTREMELY important and one of the disadvantages of the "rice" routine above.

As a side--if you need one--you can stay protein by having an egg, another chicken breast, or instead by just having a few veggies, like steamed broccoli (from the freezer pack!) with a little olive oil and a dash of kosher salt.

Granted, this isn't gourmet by any means, but it's quite tasty and satisfying and will do the job.

(I'm also trying to lose about 14 pounds to go to 150 from 164, so I'm doing something similar now.)

19. SW - Boy, can I identify w/ you.
I am 5' and have always weighed about 100. This year I gained 15 pounds too. Yes, none of my clothes fit me anymore. When you are as tiny as we are, 15 pounds really shows.

Good post.

about those extra 15 pounds. I think that my metabolism slowed down which could be a part of the reason.

22. SW - I am blaming it on menopause. It's really difficult when
you have always weighed 100 and suddenly you "chub out." If you try any of the recipes/diets...tell me the results - I am ready.

21. What is your lifestyle now?
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 03:21 PM by Ratty
I recently lost 40 lbs but my lifestyle included eating out a lot, fastfood, etc. I walk to work a half hour each day and a half hour home again, so I was getting an acceptable amount of daily exercise. I lost the first 15 lbs or so simply by not eating out but cooking everything at home. Replacing eggs with Egg Beaters, cheese with non-fat or low-fat versions, using a lot of Supra instead of sugar, a lot of cooking spray instead of sauteing in oil or butter ... but outside of those replacements I fixed whatever I wanted and ate as much as I wanted. I didn't sacrifice anything as far as flavor and food went, but I did sacrifice a lot more time, effort and convenience.

Later I started really cutting down on calories and exercising more but that first 15 lbs was essentially free and fairly easy.

Also I started going to the Fat Free Recipe Archive and trying a lot fo new things. Some I didn't care for but a few I'm keeping in my permanent repertoire.

http://cgi.fatfree.com/cgi-bin/fatfree/recipes.cgi

Good luck!
