What vile food did your parents or grandparents eat?
My grandmother, bless her, lived with us. She LOVED her pickled pigs feet. Just adored 'em. She was also fond of chipped beef in a jar (which I didn't mind so much) and turkey necks.

Oh... and she HATED to wear her teeth. This woman could go piranha on a pig's foot using just her gums. She was fun.

1. My Swedish grandfather loved his lutefisk
Grandma wouldn't allow it in the house, so he had to eat it in the garage, though. :D

My grandmother AND my mother both loved "salmon soup", which from what I could tell, entailed dumping a can of canned salmon into a pot with milk and heating it up. When everybody including the dog started gagging from the smell, it was done.

Mashed with butter some brown sugar, cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. Thanksgiving side dish but only two of us eat them.

I grew up in NY and worked in a Deli as a teen. I LOVE liverwurst (haven't had it in years - hard to find in California) but I sliced a lot of headcheese, but never had the courage to taste it. It just LOOKED so vile.

42. Very funny spelling
Brautwurst actually translates as "Bride Sausage" ... :) - I think you mean Bratwurst (Fried Sausage). My kid loves it, but I'm vegetarian. Sauerkraut, however, is very nice, if processed correctly. You should try my vegetarian Sauerkraut Pizza with cheese and pineapple ...

32. Rinderwurst.
It's a type of meat not stuffed into a casing (suprise suprise for a German dish). It's made from roast beef, oatmeal, allspice and other ingredients.

However when I was young we could still get cow heads from the local meat lockers which ended up on our kitchen table from time to time. The cheek meat was sliced off in preparation for the Rinderwurst.

41. Polish sausage, kielbasa
My grandmother cooked with this, used it in soups, especially, and was an excellent cook. Everything that she made was from scratch, never consulting a recipe, and it was just wonderful. I grew up on her cooking. My mother continues to cook kielbasa, but just buys the stuff, already made, in the grocery store. She just boils it, and, sorry, it just looks like poop to me. I would never eat it. I think that my mother is ashamed of her heritage, for many reasons, and she never learned to cook the wonderful dishes that my Babci did. My mother does make those terrible meat and rice filled cabbage rolls, which I can say, but not spell, but they are terrible, too. I did eat my grandmother's, though they weren't my favorite. I just wish so much that I had learned to cook from my Babci. I especially loved pirogies, but my mother can't make them. I love to cook, but missed my chance. I am proud of my heritage, but my Babci died when I was 20, and I was not interested in cooking yet, stupid me.:-(
