SUNDANCE CHANNEL (also on other times this month)
With documentaries like Bowling For Columbine and his latest furore-inspiring effort Fahrenheit 9/11, filmmaker Michael Moore has put topical political documentary making back in mainstream cinemas. And it’s no bad thing when avenues to express real dissent are effectively channeled by the concentrations of media ownership. So, The President Versus David Hicks comes at an interesting and prescient time.
This modest but thought provoking account of current Aussie internee and one time Taliban fighter David Hicks is a direct intervention into this controlled climate. Ironically, just as the film is about to open, the US may be changing its policy on “enemy combatants” at the infamous Guantanamo Bay. Still Hicks (and fellow Australian Mamdouh Habib) was held without due process.
This documentary – which has already aired on SBS TV - follows the trail of David’s father, Terry Hicks, as he is repeatedly knocked back by the American authorities as he tries to have his son released.
The facts of the case are reasonably well known. Hicks was in Afghanistan when he was picked up, and he was a combatant, fighting against the forces of the United States. The President Versus David Hicks tries to paint in the back story of how a restless and adventurous young Australian man came to attach himself to Islam and, eventually, to fight alongside the Taliban.
