Wasabi coated peanuts
Hootchie Mama!
HOT-HOT-HOT!
Peanuts encrusted with a kind of wasabi dough.
Goes straight to the frontal lobes, then settles in the sinuses.
Only lasts several seconds.
From Trader Joe's.
Got 'em for my birthday.
Whew.

Sagan brought some when we went deer hunting. They do open your sinus.

7. Tabasco is for sissies.
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 06:52 PM by trof
OK, not really. I like Tabasco. I've just had a lot hotter.
Habaneros.
Anyway...Tabasco story:
At a dinner party. A guest asked "Y'all got any Tabasco?"
Bob is a good friend, in his 70s. He really likes Tabasco.
The host brought out two bottles of hot sauce considerably more sophisticated (and hotter) than Tobasco. Bob smiled, shook his head, and said nothing. He didn't try the sauces.

My point: If a guest asks for something by name, then that's the thing he would like to have. If you have it, give it to him. I KNOW our host had Tobasco. Saw it on the kitchen counter. He was showing off his repertoire(?) of hot sauces.

"Got any ketchup?"
"Yeah, try this Grey Poupon mustard."
???

5. Question:
Why do people think it's a clever thing to do to try to burn out their mouths and esophagus?

Is it some macho thing or masochism or what?

Because it strikes me as a singularly dumb thing to try.

Why not just drink boiling water and be done with it?

8. Oh come on.
I like hot stuff. Peppers have FLAVOR, not just heat.
Besides, it feels so good when it stops.

9. It can be a cultural thing...
Mexican, Indian, etc. Scientists have found that eating hot things stimulates the same part of your brain that is stimulated when one goes on roller coasters. So that's good because essentially, I'm a roller coaster fanatic even though I hate the things because I eat hot stuff like wasabi peas. :)

18. For the incredible rush, maaaaan!
SUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRGGGGE!

In my mind, I am now jumping out of a plane on a snowboard, doing flips while eating Wasabi peanuts and drinking Mountain Dew, as a snowy mountain rushes up to greet me. I pull the ripcord on my pack at the last second and float down to the mountain. I snowboard down the slopes, purposely running into people on skis. I'm on my 5th Mountain Dew and second package of Wasabi peanuts at this point as I purposely make a wrong turn and go off a cliff but latch onto a passing hang glider. I scramble up and grasp the bar and shove a handful of Wasabi peanuts into his mouth. As he starts choking and spitting them up, he's completely distracted from my undoing his harness. I fly off into the sunset.

And that's just from two Wasabi peanuts. What a rush!

14. I witnessed an awful wasabi incident!
I was enjoying a lovely meal in a Japanese restaurant until a member of our party, an elderly unsuspecting mother of my friend, dipped into the wasabi dish thinking it was guacamole. Wow, I never saw such a miserable woman in my life. Heck, she was in her eighties and could have died!

Wasabi coated peanuts sounds tame compared to mainlining wasabi; I'll keep an eye open for them. I also enjoy the wasabi dried peas. They're pretty good, albeit, not mouth scorching hot.

16. I'm Lovin' The Wasabi Covered Dry-Roasted PEAS!!!
I'll look for the peanuts!

You're right about the pathway that the horseradish takes... clears my sinuses out right away. Almost to the point where my eyes are about to water... then, it's gone... just as suddenly as it appeared.

17. I've had them
And they're potent.
Warning: DON'T eat them while driving a car. This is the voice of personal experience talking.
My other reaction, after trying them, was:
"I can think of no possible social function at which I'd serve these."
