Ferris Wheel Spins Out Of Control

PHOENICIA - Leslie Wray said she was celebrating life Sunday, a day after her children had to be pulled downed by firefighters from a Ferris wheel that had spun out of control.

"I thought my children were going to fly off the Ferris wheel," she said. "I thought, 'This is it. It's all over. My children are going to die,'" Wray said.

The Shandaken resident's children, 3-year-old Melody and 5-year-old Daniel, were among seven passengers aboard a Ferris wheel for a Phoenicia Fire Department fund-raiser at Parish Field in Phoenicia Saturday night when a snapped cable sent the ride into an accelerated spin.

The Ferris wheel's operator, Shamrock Shows employee Braulio Martinez-Herrera, was treated at the scene for an arm injury, but Shandaken police said no riders were injured in the mishap, which occurred around 8:30 p.m.
