I need to build a new computer for gaming and audio
I've got chassis and hard drives.

I need it for Doom 3, Flight Sim and heavy-duty audio mixing/MIDI.

My current video card has an SVideo output port (which I haven't tried yet) which is kewl because my home theatre is Svideo based. Video input would be neat.

So what's a good Motherboard/CPU/Audio/Video combination?

I'm trying to keep the price down.

1. It's kind of hard to build a gaming PC AND keep the price down :)
the parts for a good gaming PC aren't cheap by any means.

2. I am about to spend 3300 on a new system-YIKES!
Ok, I am really into comuters. I am going with a amd64fx53 and a nvidia 6800 ultra video card. I am buying the system from Cyberpower, I have bought from them before and was happy. They have a custom configurator that allows you to build up the system you want.
My new system will include a 20 lcd monitor and directawy sat. internet (which is 500 of that 3300)

3. Asus Motherboard/CPU combo
I prefer Asus motherboards. I have both AMD and Intel systems and do see a better performance from the AMD systems, but just a smidge. I would get a motherboard with a built in NIC at least. I have the ASUS p4p800 currently as my game system mobo.

Whatever you do, get at least 512MB of memory. 1 GB is preferential especially for Doom 3.

If you video card is pretty decent you should be ok.

4. My north star.
I trust Arstechnica when it comes to building a new box. They have a three-tiered recommendation based on the budget you're working with.

You sound like a prime candidate for the Hot Rod. It's an extremely powerful computer for about (at least, their July update) $1500, which for you would be less if you're recycling parts.

You're going to want to upgrade your video card for Doom 3. Trust me.

5. Well..
mainboard: Asus or Abit, with the NVIDIA Nforce chipset (has onboard surround sound, that supprts hardware 3D, so you won't need a separate sound card).

processor: AMD Athlon XP, 2800-3200.

Video: If you want to play Doom 3, you should really splurge on the video card and go with either the Geforce 6800 or ATI Radeon X800 Pro (both in the $300-400 range, but worth it). If you're not prepared to spend that much, then a Radeon 9500 Pro or better (but not 9600 Pro or XT, since neither is as good as the 9500) or Geforce 5600 or better. Minimum 128MB video memory.

6. UPDATE: What motherboard will handle a 1.4 Ghz Pentium 4?
It's out an IBM Net Vista B4U
