Why do so many people not know how to behave in a movie theater???
People arriving late, blocking the screen looking for seats; bringing crying babies, answering cell phones, talking, taking five minutes to unwrap a piece of candy. WTF? It's not just rowdy teenagers anymore, there are so many f***ing idiots. I'm sick of it!

1. me too
One of my major pet peeves.

I think it's the rise of video-viewing. People just think that a movie can be paused or re-wound if they miss something, so they don't bother to pay close attention anymore.

The worst was when I had to yell at two OLD ladies behind me who wouldn't shut up. They should've known better.

32. Agreed
They think they're in their living rooms. It makes me so crazy that it qualifies for a new category, something beyond "pet peeve". More like extreme annoyance or insane hatred. There are actually movie theatres that I will not attend because of the complete lack of management and the high incidence of rude customers.

Paul, if you want your boss to respect you, you have to respect him. So Paul says that he'd respect him more if he weren't sleeping with the secretary. Honestly! (RING RING) Oh, that's my sister, I'd better see what she wants. Hello? Oh I know. Yeah. I'm at the movies, what are you doing? No he didn't!

6. This is why when I do go to a theater I usually go to the
matinee and not in the premier week. That way usually older people like retirees, etc. go as well as so called "middle aged" people like myself and the behavior is much better. Hardly ever any problems with teeny boppers. Most of the time I wait until its on PPV or DVD, unless its something I really want to watch on the big screen.

33. You wouldn't believe what I've seen parents bring their children to
I had to listen to a two year old cry and beg to go home all during "Blow" because she was scared of all the violence. Her mother dragged her to the bathroom and spanked her (my sister followed them to make sure the kid would be okay), then came back to the theater with her to watch the rest of the movie with her husband/boyfriend/whatever. :eyes:

I've seen newborns at midnight movies, I saw infants and toddlers at 28 Days (a very violent zombie movie), I see parents inappropriately bring their children (of all ages) to R rated films all the time. It usually appears to be just plain selfishness. They want to see the movie and don't care how it impacts the child or don't believe it will impact them at all. It truly amazes me.

9. I'm tired of people text messaging and using their camera phones at shows
So what if they're not talking? It's still really distracting to see someone wave around a phone with text messages or a video of the show you are trying to watch live - it keeps pulling your attention away from the actual stage with the live show. I did confront some people once after the show (I couldn't reach them before - I was in the back row with no aisle, and there was no intermission) and reamed them out for waving their stupid camera phone around the whole time.

This is my New Years resolution.
When I'm at a movie watching a love scene;
And a ladies hat is blocking half the screen;
I resolve not to say "Lady please take off that hat"
I'll remove it gently with a baseball bat.

11. They do what they do in front of their own TV sets
Last time I went to the movies a family sat down across the aisle and proceded to eat dinner. Had a hamper and got out a large casserole dish, plates for four. Clink, clank of the silverware as they served each other. Don't forget the drinks, too. Had a great old time during the movie, though I doubt that any one of them really watched the film. I know I wasn't able to. That was about 15 years age. Haven't been inside a movie theatre since.

12. You People will NOT believe this.....
..but I swear every word is true.

I usually go to the very first Matinee so there won't be piles of idiots sitting around me.

I took a date once to a matinee and there was not ONE person in the theater. I thought... (Hey Cool!)

Anyway, these four people come in....procede to sit directly behind me and my date and start yakking like a broken tape recorder.

So, here we sit in a 600 seat theater and they start telling jokes.

After about 5 minutes I lost it...I reamed their asses like a serial-killer and dared them to say anything.

They finally moved but my Date was rather ,,,ah, shall we say.. pissed at me.

PS...aww..fuck her if she couldn't take a joke!

Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 04:15 PM by EstimatedProphet
this country over the last 20 years has been filling up with people who go past "me first" to "me only" attitudes. There's simply a hell of a lot of people out there anymore that believe that only what they want matters, and they are under no obligation to treat other people with any respect. It's their fundamental belief that they should be carried around on litters and idolized all day.
Amazing how so many of these people have showed up with the rise of the Republicans...

20. I think it's because people skip money on baby-sitters.
I recall hearing a woman promise her tiny son (the kid couldn't have been more than two or three; he had diapers on) that she would take him to the new Martin Lawrence movie. IT WAS RATED R. My guess is that it wasn't the kid's treat, it was mom's.

And when I saw Breaking the Waves (hardly appropriate for the Rugrats crowd), I heard a child laughing during one scene. What kind of nutcase takes little Katie or Aidan to Breaking the Waves?! Doesn't anyone read movie reviews?

But I agree with the above posters about what causes that. I've noticed that many people just don't have a clue how to behave in public, and this goes for people at religious services, restaurants, lectures, author events, and the theater. Symphony orchestras and theaters have to publish a list of isntructions for public decorum (check out the program at the Kennedy Center if you don't believe me).

My church publishes the same phrase in the guide to hymns for the mass each week: To maintain a prayerful atmosphere, please turn off all cell phones and pagers during Mass. Anyone reading this knows that the message appears each week to no avail; I hear cell phones all around the cathedral. And people get up during mass to drop coins - CLANK! CLANK! -- into the coin box for candle-lighting. Is that PRAYERFUL enough for you, Father?

One lady brings her adorable King Charles spaniel to church. I say the dog is more prayerful than some of the humans; at least he doesn't whip out his cell phone during mass.

wait until the movie has been out a few weeks, sit in the back of the theater and LEAVE IF THE BABY STARTS FUSSING. I understand how expensive babysitters are, especially for struggling young couples, but show some freaking common sense.

25. I sing with a chorus
and we do performances several times a year. Every performance, we ask beforehand for everyone to please turn off cell phones, watch beepers, etc., and every performance (and it's guaranteed to be during something like Ave Maria), some dickwad's phone rings and rings and rings, then they dig loudly in their bag for it, and ANSWER IT during our performance. Every.Fucking.Time.

26. I wouldn't enjoy a movie
with my young children in tow. I prefer to wait until I have a babysitter, or I wait for it to come out on DVD and cable. I don't understand those who drag their babies to grown up movies, because not only does it diminish the enjoyment for eveyone else, but it can't be too fun for the parents, either.

"One lady brings her adorable King Charles spaniel to church. I say the dog is more prayerful than some of the humans; at least he doesn't whip out his cell phone during mass."

I go to a silent Quaker worship, and we used to have a woman who brought her dog. A very nice and well-behaved pooch she was, too. She had her own blanket and lay on it through the entire meeting. (The dog, I mean.)

One nice thing about Quaker meetings is that they really are silent, and all the cellphones are actually turned off.

Most Quaker meetings, anyway. "Civilization" slips in once and a while.

I used to love going to the movies. It's something I didn't get to do when I was a kid very often (poor family with three kids, it adds up to an expensive night).

People think the theater is just like their home. They can do whatever they want. It's ridiculous. Further proof that our society is just way too casual.

38. Keeps me from going to the movies
Instead we invested in an HD TV and we watch DVDs at home. On the rare occasion we decide we really want to see a movie in the theater (like LOTR) we go LATE. Even so, there are still usually a number of small children, regardless of an R rating. I remember a bunch of little kids in the audience when we saw Gladiator and Underworld, which are very violent movies.

At the last 2 movies I attended in a theater I experienced all of the following: people yakking on their cell phones in the middle of the movie, walking in late and talking in a normal tone of voice even though the movie had started and cursing at the people shushing them; crying babies brought in and not removed despite several minutes of screaming!

Seriously, it would take a lot to get me into a commercial theater for a first release movie these days. It's art theaters (rarely attended by those who behave as described above) or my home entertainment system!!

41. Miniluvmaerica here
My mom, she rules. Two weeks after Harry Potter TPOA came out, we went to see it. This woman brought in her kids (They must of had some friends. There were like five or six of them.) and they were my age. So the movie starts, and this family has to resituate right AT the beginning. So after 2 or 3 minuets of jumping over the seats and talking, my mom leans over and tells the mother to ask her kids to sit, and this woman replies 'It's only a few seconds.' and so my mom answers 'It's all about you, huh?'. At that point the lady got that mom was going to tell the manager, so she told her kids to settle down.
