Nicknames for your home town
I live in Sheboygan, WI, and we call it at times Sheerboredom.

How about your town?

1. Officially, Seattle is the Emerald City
Informally, the Jet City.

When I was a kid, it was the Queen City.

I think because the Emerald City was chosen in a contest...

11. It was chosen in a contest - I think KIRO sponsored it
I remember when it was chosen. Even as a kid I thought it was stupid. Jet City suits us way better.

25. University District/University Heights
Loud, but you can get a cheap enough room.

Personally, I'd go a little farther north, to Ravenna or Maple Leaf. Or down my way, to Montlake or Capitol Hill.

40. Someone once told me an airport has to be near an international border
In order to be international. I think this was a friend with a pilot's license who at the time lived in Lubbock, Texas, which I guess would qualify (even Lubbock has an international airport!). Oh, well. We just build 'em; we don't necessarily fly 'em!

9. Orlando calls itself "The City Beautiful"
and there are some really pretty places in town...quaint cobblestone streets lines with old oak trees (well at least before Hurrican Charley.)

BUT, just about every city has its signature neighborhoods, so I don't get why they make this claim.

Dayton is, supposedly, 'Gem City.'

Back during the Mapplethorpe ruckus, my favorite nickname for Cincinnati was born: Censornati or Censornazi. I still think of it as Censornati, sometimes.

53. "The City of the Seventies"
i...that was a slogan or nickname the Chamber of Commerce was pushing for Louisville in the early 1970s.

n the 19th century it was "The Falls City"

Then, during the "New South" era, it was "Gateway to the South"

Then it was "World Class City" in the 1980s.

Most people probably just call it "Derbytown" or Derby City, after the Kentucly Derby.

It is one of the coldest places in the United States so we used to joke around and call it Brrrrmidji.

Minneapolis, where I currently reside, used to be known as Murderapolis back in the day.
