14. Hey, Page DID admit as much...
...I'll quote from Dave Lewis's monumental book "Led Zeppelin: A Celebration" with regard to "Black Dog":

"The impossible part of the riff was a Jones input, while the a cappella vocal arrangement, Page would admit years later, was influenced by Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well.'"

I think both songs are great , and that "Black Dog" stands on its own as a rock classic. It's undeniable that Page borrowed more than once, but it's also undeniable that he was and is one of rock's true originals---a masterful musician, songwriter, performer, producer and all-around flaming wonder.

15. I didn't know he copped to this one
I was never a Jimmy Page fan. Jones and Bonham were phenomenal musicians and talents in my opinion. I know a lot of people like Zeppelin, I just can't get past 3 notes of Plant's squeals and I still think the band ripped off too many people to be considered good songwriters. He did come up with a few cool riffs though.
I don't really care what people listen to, but I get a bit pissed when I see what some of those guys did back in the early days in regards to some of the blues men who never got a penny or the proper tip of the hats. I know many people did it, but that's not really an excuse.

17. I respect your opinion. You're clearly a fan of the blues...
...and so am I. I was listening to my grandfather's scratchy Robert Johnson 78's long before they were remastered for CD.

But I also happen to be a Zeppelin fanatic, with more than 200 CD's worth of concert and studio music from the band. Zeppelin has been my favorite rock band for more than 25 years now. But great minds can disagree about Zep. I totally AGREE with you that so many great blues, soul and R&B giants and geniuses of the last many decades have been screwed over in terms of money and authorship, going back to the early Elvis/Bill Haley days of rock. And even before that. The whole "race records" segregation of music in America is just "Jim Crow" in a different guise. Hell, you could go back to jazz in the '20s and '30s---the vicious racism that masters like Ellington and Armstrong had to face right here in NYC. Tragic and abominable, it makes me want to throw up.

I guess my point is that I just won't lay all of this at Jimmy Page's doorstep. I KNOW you weren't doing that either, but I just wanted to put this into some larger perspective.

18. And I respect yours (even w/ that Steelers avatar :) I am from Cleveland)
Really, the big difference I have found with many of the Zeppelin records is they put their name on the songs. I don't hate the band or the players, and I know that a lot of them were pinching things from the race records they got their hands on back then.
Styles are a different ballgame. People say that Elvis stole the black man's music and he didn't deserve to become what he became. In that case I would have to disagree. Elvis was heavily influenced by some of the blues, gospel and country that he heard growing up and that's what he sang. He didn't put out "That's alright Mama" and claim the song was his, even though it sounded nothing like the original. I just used that as an example.
As I said, there was some great talent in Led Zeppelin and I even own all their records and some video, but they seemed to be the most blatant at taking other people's songs and words and making some big bucks off of them. They definitely have their spot in Rock history and they deserve much of it. I have mellowed a lot since my younger days when it came to Zeppelin, in fact I don't argue any music any longer. I have to say that when two of my band members played in a Zeppelin tribute band, they made me appreciate the group a lot more. They did very well here, and I attended some of the shows.
I still have to say though...it is still hard for me to enjoy Plant's voice, but that is just personal preference and not a dig.

20. Hey, Browns' fan---you rock!....
You know your shit and I respect that all the way. Hell, all true rock fans know how much Elvis loved the blues, gospel and country music he grew up with and how the powers-that-be shaped him first into the Great White Hope and later into the Great White Dope.

It is good that on a forum such as this we Browns and Steelers fans can come together and make our peace without bloodshed. I can't say I didn't enjoy the Steeelers's persistent ass-kicking of the Browns in the '70s ( OK, that's a passive-aggressive dig. Sorry!), but I for one am happy to see that Browns in Cleveland, and let's all of us, Browns and Steelers fans together, unite and hope for a great NFL season. I live in NYC now, but if I can make it back for a Browns/Steelers tailgater I will. And I'll pour an Iron City on your head if I have the chance. Out of love and respect for a fellow DU'er!

I think the song lends itself to rocking a little harder. And the Flettword Mac version; lose the stupid cowbell.
