How do you add pics and links to a blog?

I'm so out of it when it comes to stuff like this...

1. A link

Let's say you wanted to link back to here, but you wanted the
words "message board" to be clickable. You'd write:

I was perusing my favorite <a
href="http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss">message
board</a> today.

To add a picture -- is the picture already online somewhere?
Can you upload to your site? (Many free sites don't allow
uploads.)

2. Pics probably won't work...

I think you have to pay to post those.

I was hoping to add a Kerry/Edwards button that links to the site...
