Best and worst hot cereals?
Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 08:29 PM by mac56
A spinoff of the other cereal thread.

I love Ralston. It really, truly is the only hot cereal I can stand. Yes, I know hot cereal is better for me, and I grew up in Minnesota. Big deal.

Worst? Cream of Wheat. Great god in heaven, it's tepid library paste in a bowl.

14. I agree
And Grape-Nuts slightly warm (25 seconds in the microwave) does me nicely all through the summer.

2. Best--oatmeal, though I don't have it
that often anymore. Its the one I didn't mind having when my mom made it for us.

Worst--Wheetena. Though its supposed to be good for you. Just don't like the consistency.

3. Oat Meal
I usually get Meijer store brand because it is much less expensive than Quaker.

You don't like Cream of Wheat. I like the stuff. I like it even better when you skorch the bottom of the pan. Cream of Wheat instant is not too good though.

Cream of Rice was one I never cared for.

4. I like the rolled multi-grain stuff that you get in bulk at the organic
co-op...it's like 60 cents a pound and there's nothing in it.

Once, as an experiment, I bought a small amount of whole rye, whole oats, wheat berries and arborio rice, and made multi-grain risotto. My seasoning was flawed (I tried to make it breakfast-y and ended up sweetening it too much), but the general premise worked well, and I have enought to try a few more times.

I can't stand the Quaker fruity crap.

5. winner in both categories -
grits.

real grits, the kind take 40 minutes to make and that i add some grilled tomatoes, peppers and onion and cheese (crumble a little bleu into the mix) to is the best. that instant stuff is just plain awful.

9. That sounds delicious
The only grits I have ever made are the ones I cook in the microwave in a few minutes. I don't even know which brand I use; I think it is Quaker Oats brand grits. Is your product somehow different? More "raw"?

28. check your local co-op or see if you have a mill localy -
you might be surprised. you can get real grits mail order, too, and a little bit will last a long time.

10. If you can find it.
It's getting harder to find since Nestle bought the old Ralston Purina brands. Grab on to it if you can. You won't be sorry.

It was very soul. I never tried the product until a few years ago when I quit drinking milk. It sure is sweet.

No offense, but I haven't had boiled overshoes "made right" either. Not sure I even want to.

19. I love it too
I like to experiment with what I put in it: nuts, raisins, honey, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, other fruit, brown sugar, cinnamon, etc. Obviously, not all at the same time.

I do like it plain though too. You can also fry up the leftovers the next day.

26. Yes!
Yummy.

Don't use the instant kind - never really understood that anyway. It takes five minutes to get the maple syrup and milk out.

15. Hodgson Mill Oat Bran
What it lacks in taste it more than makes up in what it does for my blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Magic.

17. I like grits and oatmeal
But only if you cook them on the stove.

I'd like to cook them in the microwave, but grits aren't supposed to be crunchy from undercooking, and my nuked grits always are.

20. IMO,
Cream of rice and plain old oatmeal (long-cooked), with butter and sugar (brown or refined), are way the best.

Cream of wheat is okay. It *is* possible to not make it right.

For worst, I nominate a product that was around when I was a kid (still is?) called "Wheatena"--an always soupy mush of tiny granular brown wheaty-tasting pellets. I think it was the soupy texture I hated the most--like havinhg breakfast soup, basically--yuck.
