Ricky Williams wants more money and less work; may return in 2005
According to tonight's web edition of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel:

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-826williamsback,0,36883.story?coll=sfla-sports-front

"For the first time since filing his retirement papers with the NFL, ex-tailback Ricky Williams reached out to Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt earlier this week and is considering a comeback in the future, according to several NFL sources."

"A return in 2004 would be unlikely unless Williams were to register a favorable appeal to NFL Commissioner Paul Tabliabue. Because he was in the league's drug-testing program following three positive tests for marijuana, Williams automatically was credited with a fourth failed test when he filed retirement papers earlier this month. That means the automatic imposition of a year-long suspension."

"These sources say he had several frustrations with the team, foremost among them his contract status. Williams' contract, which runs through 2006, was slated to pay him $3.74 million this season."

"Sources also say Williams was bothered by the frequency he was used - an NFL-record 775 carries in a two-season span - and did not think that would change with the promotion of Chris Foerster to offensive coordinator after Joel Collier stepped down and returned to his post as running backs coach."

1. Oh really, Captain Herbalife?
Said it before: not even the best weed could be worth giving up what he gave up.

2. What did he give up?
What's so great about getting beaten up and destroying the quality of the remaining years of your life?

Better to walk away while you still can walk.

Being in the NFL is not necessarily a great life. Money isn't everything.

5. Fuck Ricky!
I pray that Wannstedt never lets this guy back in a Miami uniform. Try and trade him for a 1st and 2nd Round draft pick.

7. Trade him to Chicago for Adewale Ogunleye
That would mesh with our front office brainstorming of late.

No way in Fin hell Wanny is going to hold a grudge, with his job on the line. Once Dave is out of Miami it's like Wayne Fontes in Detroit, no more head coaching opportunities in the NFL. He would have to settle for an assistant position or a mid-level college head coach.

8. It won't matter
The way this team looks, Wanny should be gone at season's end. I'm certain that if Williams could legally return for the season, Wanny'd take him back.

I haven't thought of Wayne Fontes in years. He was a truly awful coach.

6. Just a comment...
I don't blame him a bit.

The physical punishment and later-life crippling isn't worth it.

9. Just two comments...
(1) I'm highly skeptical about that being Ricky's thought process here.

(2) How many years did he play in high school, college, and the pros without considering that till now?
