DU women! Raise a glass to the 84th birthday of the 19th Amendment!
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 08:01 AM by Richardo
Woo Hoo! :toast:   :smoke:

In tribute, let's make sure as many women as possible are registered to vote on Nov 2.

Thanks for all your decades of activism and participation.

1. If it weren't for the ladies, * would be elected in a landslide.
God bless the womenfolk!

2. If BuchCo stays in for another 4 years, the 19th Amendment....
...probably won't have an 85th anniversary.

13. Well, they already want to make us subservient again.
And I'm sure with that will take away our right to vote, work, and leave the house without "permission." We'll probably have to have a note from our husbands or fathers allowing us out of the house next. God, I'd say more, but I'd get arrested.

3. Special note to Wyoming, the first state to give women the right to vote.
Of course, they weren't exactly being altrusitic, they were just trying to attract women settlers, but still! They were first. :toast:

11. I have to specially mention Alice Paul....
and Lucy Burns....

Goddesses one and all!

Anyone who does not know the amazing work these women did needs to take a women's studies class ASAP and watch "Iron Jawed Angels" as soon as it's available on DVD (within the next few weeks).

16. Iron Jawed Angels....
should be required viewing for EVERY woman! It was a great movie about two of the "radical" women who made the difference for us all.

Long live rad gals! :toast:

8. Women -- half the story has never been told
Now you see the light . . . STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS!!!

Yeah. Woman power!!!!!

:toast: :toast:   :smoke:

One of these days, one of these days.

There's a wonderful speech by John Kerry on his website to a rally of women, about women's rights, and how women are still held in slavery around the world. And how HE ACTUALLY CARES. Imagine that.

When the oppression of women finally ends in this world, we will be a lot closer to realizing our humanity.

20. Looking at that picture above, the phrase "All hat and no cattle"...
...immediately comes to mind. The other thought that I get is there's the man who's policies, leadership, priorities and self-centered political ambitions lead directly to the kind of grief, pain and terror which show in the faces of those two young women. Do we really want to allow four more years of that?

10. Hell yeah!
Wow imagine that in just the last 100 years of this country women couldn't vote. Amazing. We've come a long way baby!

12. Yeah!
I'm so glad the government deems my votes worthy. Too bad it took so many millennia for it to happen though.
Be conscious fellow womenfolk. 84 years isn't that long ago in terms of historical time frames and the current administration has no problem with the concept of the state controlling our bodies and our reproductive choices.

Stay vigilant!!!!

15. The biggest group of apathetic non-voters is young, single
women.

My sister's in that group. Until recently, she was still registered to vote at my parents' address. She lives in a different state, and has never voted.

She finally got her butt down to the clerk's office and registered in Colorado, simply so she can try her best to turn that red state blue. (She's not a partisan by any stretch, but she can't stand King George.)

Here's to the franchise!

18. Introduce her to the term "straight ticket"
That way the rest of the Democrats in CO can benefit from her dislike of El Rey Arbusto.

And shame on women (and men) who don't vote. :grr:

It stuns me it took our republic 144 years to grant this Diamond Of Democratic Rights to the givers of life. May we never take these freedoms for granted, and work harder to secure more and more...
