That was the best version of the Scarlet/Fire medley, by far.

5. Chicago 5/13/77 Scarlet Fire is right up there too
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 08:51 AM by 56kid
Second time they played it and I was there to witness it. Cornell was the first. I've compared the two and grudgingly admit that the Cornell version is a shade better, but since I was actually at the Chicago show and had the tape of it that very night & years before I heard the Cornell show, the Chicago show has a special place in my sonic heart.
The Estimated Prophet and Jack-a-Roe at the Chicago show kick ass too.

7. ANY show from that '77 run is great :)
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 09:02 AM by ET Awful
They're all great shows (I personally think some are overrated because they had great sound quality, even if the performances weren't as good as others of the time). For instance, that Cornell show has often been picked as the so-called best show ever, but it's really pretty average when compared to other shows of the same tour. The tape was just widely available and of high quality (thanks to Betty Cantor's soundboard recordings) so a lot of people had excellent quality recordings. As we all know people will normally rate an excellent recording of an average show higher than an average recording of an excellent show :).

If anyone wants a version of 5/8/77 with NO cuts in any of the songs, let me know. I have a version that has been patched using a high quality audience tape of the same show to fill in the missing pieces. The crossover is hardly noticeable.

I have a few shows I love dearly from the era, 2/26/77 probably being first among them. I still think that the first Terrapin was one of the best ;)

11. I'd rather they didn't
as of the time it goes on I-tunes it becomes an official release.

That means it can no longer be freely copied or traded.

That's NOT a good thing.

13. They have a HUGE number of things to fall back on such as
continued touring, continual releases of Dicks Picks and the View from the Vault series, etc.

Basically by removing the trading of shows, you eliminate one of the last ways that many heads still connect and keep the whole scene alive.

15. I know - it does suck - I have always loved the community aspect but I
wonder - how will that die. Sure you'll have official releses but that doesn't kill all the extant tapes, does it? I mean wjat about Dick's picks? I think its just different. Hope I wasn't too insulting with that last post - I meant no offense my friend!

16. Not at all offensive. . . . let me try to clarify :)
The official position of the band has always been that a show may be freely traded UNTIL it becomes an official release, at which point it may no longer be traded. No, the copies don't vanish, but you can no longer trade them. That also means that resources such as the archive that is online now providing so many shows will also vanish.

For instance, the shows that are released as Dicks Picks can't be traded any more. They can no longer be circulated other than by purchasing a copy. This is fine because the Dicks Picks releases have consistently been of shows where a good copy wasn't already being traded, so it was a boon to people who wanted high quality recordings of those shows.

This isn't the case if EVERY soundboard recording becomes an official release.

18. Well. . .
Phil has never been really keen on the tape-trading thing anyway. More because he's a perfectionist than because he doesn't want the music to be free. He just doesn't want a less than perfectly mastered copy of his performance circulating (he's got a bit of an ego0.

It's probably Weir and the rest that are holding it up.

24. Brother... It's already here!!!!!
Please point your browser here: http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Grateful%20Dead

Not iTunes, but lossless Shorten or Flac formats... easily convertible to apple lossless for use in iTunes. There are many shows on this wonderful site that are directly from Vault. Send me a message if anyone needs help, I've been doing this for while.

There are many other bands represented on this site as well, they include every band that condones live taping of shows. The sheer number of bands that allow this might surprise you!

Downside? Well ... if you are like me... you will be buying a new external harddrive every month. :p

Btw: Cornell is a great show...but overrated. Just listen to a few of the 85+ boards of the '77 shows on archive.org and you will see. Peace.

10. I miss that fat man!
I saw my first show at age 8 at the iowa state fair August 1974. Yes I am still looking for a complete set list and tapes. Last time I heard it was not available. I kept writing to Dick before he died to get anything they had but from what I could gather he didn't think they had a complete set either. With the new agreement to buy tunes or shows it might pop sometime!

20. Great, but 77 is overrated.
I'm willing to bet that 1977 is thought of as such a great year because of the huge number of BettyBoards put out from that year, and the fact that the Dead were really tight. However, with that tightness comes a trade-off. Look at DeadBase's setlists section for 1977: no "Jams," no "Dark Stars," no forty-minute explorations of deep space. Setlists were pretty restrictive: "Samson" and "Estimated" at almost every show. I have a bunch of tapes from 77, but thay don't get played much around my house because they get repetitive pretty quick. Sure, the Dead had a tight groove in 77, but the reasons why I listen to the Dead aren't well-represented in 1977.

Ina all fairness, I should point out that Cornell was the tape that got me into the Dead; the first tape I heard where I "got it." I remember being given many many tapes by a friend (Travis Moody) that didn't really send me over the moon (I liked 6/24/76 Upper Darby a lot though; HelpSlipFrank was mindblowing), and was still skeptical that the Dead were a good band; or even that they could play in tune together! Then I went over to HIS friend's house, who had a huge tape collection, and asked his opinion which tapes were the best. He immediately put on Cornell FULL VOLUME. That amazing Scarlet inro blasted out at me and all doubt was removed. I needed that tape!

Having said that, I'd like to also say that I'm one of those weird Deadheads who prefers 76 to 77. Give me The July 76 Orpheum shows over the May 77 Northeast run any old day. The boundaries between first set material and second set material hadn't been set in stone yet; any song could be a launchpad for a big jam, the tightness was there, and Jerry was playing that awesome white Travis Bean guitar (my favorite guitar of his). 76 has the exploratory feel of 73-74 with the benign mellowness of the later "ballad years" and Mickey's newly polyrythmic reentry. And the vocals were superb.

Cornell 77 was a really good show, and Phil's superball intro to Scarlet is immortal, but I don't think it's the Dead's best show of all time. Here's a few more obscure shows you should hear before making that judgement:

11/22/72 Austin, Texas
6/18/74 Louisville
7/18/76 Orpheum
11/29/80 Alligator Alley
8/10/82 Iowa City
6/22/91 Chicago

Anyhow, that's another picky Head's two cents.

22. Towards the end of Keith's tenure in the band....
late 78-79, he was just mind-numbingly apathetic in his playing. I have a few tapes from early 79, before Brent, and Keith is almost sonically invisible.

And I prefer Keith's grand piano years (71-76) to his Rhodes years (77-79) too. I think he was limited by the Rhodes and the organ on those tours.

I used to be a TOTAL snob for early Dead, but in the last few years, I've been delving into the 80's and 90's, and there's a lot of good music there; I think 82 might be my favorite year now! And the early Hornsby-Welnick era also is home to a number of very exploratory, spaced out, jam-filled shows.

Anyhow, yeah, never underestimate the power of GODchaux.

I saw 6/15/92: ask most collectors and they'll tell you that was the worst show of 92.

I saw 6/5/93 (Motti's birthday) Easy Answers was debuted at that show. Enough said.

What the fuck!

25. I like it all
I love the western set, the free jams, the ballads everything. Louisville 74 was stellar one of my first tapes. Iowa city Iowa 1982 was a good one. 1984 in Cedar Rapids Iowa was a good one as well. 1979-80 UNI Cedar Falls Iowa when they busted out the full Terrapin was one hell of a show! I wanted to see Jerry sittin in a small bar picking the banjo when he was 80 but it was not to be. I have tried the Phil and friends, the other ones etc and I just can't get past the huge screaming black hole in the sound. I have felt the Jerry sound razor me in half like a hot knife through butter and in the next minute rain down on me like a waterfall or a fine mist. All those shows were so special I guess I am glad I got to see them at all. Rat dog has been fun a couple times but the ride is over and I am still really fuckin bummed out! I could handle the shrub a lot better if I knew there was a fat guy in a pocket tee balancing out that POS!
