The only other one that comes close, but is still a distant second, is USC-UCLA or Georgia-Florida State.

I'm a Duck, and the Oregon v. Oregon State game literally shuts down the state for the day.
Is this the best rivalry, probably not to people from Michigan, Texas Florida, Bama or SoCal.

28. Its been awhile since both have had "crappy" teams
There has been only one year in teh past 20 (1991) when both teams were bad in the same year. In the last 15 years the Ducks have missed Bowl games 7 times, and they were back in the late 80s and 1991. Also, if those seasons were plyed today in the age of 30+ bowl games, the Ducks would have made a bowl game for 18 out of those 20 seasons (1987 and 1991 they sucked) I'll grant you the 70s and early 80s were not great for the Ducks, but they broke .500 almost half the time. That was all pre-nike too. When the Big-Ten ruled the NCAA, Oregon had no team booster to compete. Now that they have an equal source of alumni funding, they compete every year for Rose Bowl and have been in the national title race each year.

I'll grant you that the Beavers have not been successful until the last 6 years.

Regardless of their team records, that game has been closing schools, courts, banks and whole towns for decades. It is the most anticipated annual event for millions of Oregonians and Duck and Beaver alum in other states (myself included).

Most Duck alum would rather lose the national championship then lose to Oregon State. That is the defining characteristic of a grweat rivalry.

45. It's the only rivalry that's interesting when the teams are 3-8.
If Michigan and OSU, FSU and FL, Alabama and Auburn, GA and GT, OK and NE, or USC and UCLA had losing seasons, nobody would care about the game except for the diehards who care about every game.

Army-Navy is different.

46. Agree, Alabama-Auburn
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 07:34 PM by DoctorBombay
From my years of watching college football, and from what I hear from those who have followed it for even longer, the Iron Bowl is by far the most intense.

On edit: the other candidates:

Michigan-Ohio St. I'm married to a Buck and I lived in MI for a time. Some Michigan fans consider Michigan State their biggest rival. A couple misguided ones think it's Notre Dame. The intensity has to be there from both sides, and it's not here completely.

Florida-Georgia. Same here. UF has Fla. State, UGa has Georgia Tech.

Army-Navy. Awesome game to watch, great intensity, but the *hatred* only lasts three hours.

USC-UCLA- WAY too laid back! (I'm a Bruin fan)

Texas-Texas A&M- very underrated, in state, but UT has the Oklahoma factor that just picks away at it.

But Alabama-Auburn is all out hatred 100% from each side. Also, in a state with no professional teams in any sport, this gets all the focus.

South: RV's sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.

GAME DAY
North: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
South: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast and rushes over to where ESPN is broadcasting "Game Day Live" to get on camera and wave to the idiots up North who wonder why "Game Day Live" is never broadcast from their campus.

TAILGATING
North: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio station with truck tailgate down.
South: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking accompanied by live performance by "David Allen Coe," who comes over during breaks and asks for a hit off bottle of bourbon.

North: You ask "Where's the stadium?". When you find it, you walk right in.
South: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the state's fifth largest city.

CONCESSIONS
North: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
South: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on it, filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon.

WHEN NATIONAL ANTHEM IS PLAYED
North: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up.
South: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect 3-part harmony.

South: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.

COMMENTARY (MALE)
North: "Nice play."
South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!!"

North: "My, this certainly is a violent sport."
South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!!"

RADIO ANNOUNCERS
North: Neutral and paid.
South: Announcers are colorful and make no apologies of who they're rooting for.

AFTER THE GAME
North: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
South: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to the nearest package store for more bourbon, planning begins for next week's game.

49. Auburn-Alabama is the most intense and hateful.
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 08:06 PM by Elwood P Dowd
When you ask other professional athletes who show up on the sidelines for that game, they will tell you it's the most intense they've ever seen. Talk to CBS or ESPN sideline announcers. They will tell you the same thing. The games haven't been that great the last couple of years though.

The crowd noise can also be deafening. You have 87,000 people screaming on every play. There are no professional sports in Alabama, so this game is talked about just about every day on the am sports talk shows. People have been shot and killed over this game. Better watch who you piss off.

Bo Jackson once gained almost 300 yards rushing in the 83 game. I saw an Auburn defensive end almost decapitate Joe Namath in the 63 game. A tornado came by the stadium one year, and they kept on playing. Some people were paying over $1,000 a ticket for the 89 game.

54. I don't know. NDSU and UND used to HATE each other.
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 09:37 PM by northwest
Now that NDSU is DI, it's no longer a rivalry. (I'm an NDSU student, BTW) UND may have won the last football game between the two schools, but ultimately, NDSU has won the overall rivalry war. Lemme explain:

NDSU/UND was more than just an athletics rivalry. It was a pissing match among the two universities to see who would be recognized as more of the flagship university of the state. The two universities as a whole HATED each other. Grand Forks could not STAND playing second (and later third) fiddle to Fargo as the top city in the state, so they used the power of their University to gain influence.

And the ND board of higher education was stuck in the middle of this whole thing through many decades. UND has seriously tried to thwart NDSU's efforts in obtaining doctoral and masters programs throughout the years. GF cannot STAND the fact that Fargo is the top city in the state, and as a result, has tried in the past to keep NDSU down to a lower level than their university.

The football rivalry was just one way of expressing the absolute HATRED the two schools have for each other. UND for its jealousy of Fargo, and NDSU for UND trying to hold back NDSU for many decades.
