That's it. I'm outta this town. Can't be a reporter without a car. I'm gonna get on the horn with every place I can think of to get a job in Vancouver today. We'll see.
Even if my folks lend me dough to fix it..... I can't take the financial hit.

So dies the day

to induce guilt. Besides, you'll be happier in Vancouver. After you visit flamingyouth, come down to San Francisco and we'll have a minibrew!

5. I'm in the same boat
every repair to my 95 leaky/rusty undrcarriage saturn costs 500-1000. At this point I would imagine the car is worth about $1000 ($35,000 Canadian). But I do it, 1000 bones a year and only having to pay for liability insurance is less than a new car or car payment would be.

It's not easy having to make that kind of decision for monetary necessity.

13. Ahhh.
If' she's kaput, she's kaput. $$1,500 sounds like a good deal for a new engine, installed. Depending on the car, the actual cost of a rebuilt engine may only be around $500. Do you have a community college or vocational high school near you where they teach automotive mechanics? If you buy the engine, they might install it for free as a class project.

14. Nope, nothing like that
I have grease monkey buds back home though! All I need to do is get the car there...rent a trailer and tow it back most likely, which would bring the cost to about $700.

8. Sorry, Jeremy
You'll be much happier back in Vancouver. You can start working on your book on crazy small towns in Western Canada.

Come down to Seattle and I'll buy you a beer. You can take the train. ;)

15. $1500 Canadian, or Seventy Six cents on the Dollar...
I was walking my dog today and I saw a nice car for $1500 U.S.

But I live in California, where many people have friends who will fix old cars for the fun of it and a case of beer.

Good luck.

My wife and I are still driving a truck I bought in 1987. I don't wash it, except for the windows, and we grow a nice crop of lichen on the faded paint.

I hope it passes the smog test again this year, but it always has, so I'm not much worried.

engine in it... can't you do the junkyard thing and try to find a working replacement on the cheap?
