DU movie recommendations: what should I go rent RIGHT NOW
DUers: Mrs. IconCat has requested that I pick tonight's flicks. I am unfortunately drawing a big blank.

Since DUers are so knowledgeable, maybe you can help. What are some great movies that I should pick up?

Hurry! I have to leave pretty soon!

We loved that movie. Just don't see it with the English dubbed in, like they have on the VHS.

Kutcher was really good in it, I thought.

Didn't get to watch the alternate ending though. :(

46. Butterfly effect = both endings are good -- but I liked the commercial one
better than the director's cut.

The Director's cut is awesome, but I prefered the other ---- I LOVED having a CHOICE of endings.

Brilliant marketing move actually.

This film got slammed by critics unfairly IMHO.

Kutcher was great (altho it took me about a half hour to believe anything he did -- then I LOVED him)

I think that this film will get great word of mouth and do well in DVD.

5. Well, Mrs. IconCat and I are fans of many genres.
We can see Alien one night, then Adaptation the next. We just want it to not suck.

Off the top of your head, mrboba, any great flicks.

Thanks!

18. If you liked Spirited Away...
My Neighbor Totoro is my suggestion. A kids film, but so hilarious and beautiful, also done by mayazaki. It's my absolute favorite flick.

Princess Mononoke is also Mayazaki, but for adults. Stunningly beautiful (and I liked it's socialist undertones).

I just saw Head of State and plan on buying it. Highly recommend.

Barbershop is great as well. I own it and have watched it a few times.

I dunno, for some reason I am into comedies lately. To offset the collective "mood" lately, I suppose.

But that one is very special. The soldier in the tunnel is one of the great antiwar pieces ever and the anti-nuke piece, given the bombings there in Japan - is awfully moving.

The mountain climber's death dream is incredible.

41. For future reference
Here are some other ideas to put in your rental list. Some of them are things that might have been overlooked by the mainstream media and/or never gotten to your local cinema:

comedies:
Cold Comfort Farm
Shooting Fish
Shall We Dance? (The Japanese version)
Eat Drink Man Woman
Jet Lag
Better Than Sex
Born Romantic
The Monster

drama:

I concur with the DUer who mentioned the Merchant-Ivory production Maurice. Definitely a wonderful movie, and so romantic.

And don't forget classics like:

To Have and Have Not
The Big Sleep
Key Largo (But not during hurricane season!) :-)
Stagecoach (1939 version; accept no substitutes)

55. Kikujiro
Might be hard to find, since it's a subtitled Japanese film. It's a Beat Takeshi film but it is a radical departure from his violent gangster films.

It's a sweet road movie about a little boy looking for his mother, and the shiftless jackass (played by Takeshi) who is sent as his guardian of sorts. They have all kinds of misadventures on the road, mainly because Takeshi's character is such an asshole. :P It's laugh out loud funny, poignant, and bittersweet all at the same time. Sort of like the Ed O'Neill movie Dutch, but with a brain. Definitely one of my favorite films.

If you can't rent it, Sundance and IFC run it every so often.
