Well today I ran into my Republican friend from Boston today (great story)
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 03:50 PM by noahmijo
I have a buddy I met from school, we actually met because he saw my Yankee shirt and he was wearing his Red Sox shirt and funnily enough instead of fighting we became buds when we discovered that we each have a good sense of humor about it.

But anyways, he is in the Army attending college, and I recall him in the past lightly bashing liberals, but nothing ever really harsh or serious.

So today I run into him and I'm wearing a big Kerry sticker that I just got from the Young Democrats at the UofA and we're in the hall you know where all the classrooms are.

So after talking about school stuff ect, I said "look I know you may not like the fact that I've gone Democrat and I'm supporting Kerry, but I don't want it to ruin our friendship here, I have my reasons, and I don't care if you're still a Bush supporter"

(I have lost a friend actually due to my going to Kerry and I have been getting into nasty fights with my father over this change of mine as many of you know about on here)

So expecting the worse I prepared to face the onslaughts of "Kerry betrayed the soldiers" ect the typical RW response instead I got from him

"You know what I'm a Republican and I'm votin for Kerry, lemme tell you somethin I hate that fucking no good scumbag Bush, I've ALWAYS hated that asshole, I wanted McCain to win and he smeared him up and down in such a disrespectful way, McCain served, Kerry served THEY WERE FUCKIN THERE! and Bush fuckin chickened out and went AWOL and I gotta say I'm in the fuckin military and shit like that I don't take with a grain of salt you DON'T bash guys who served honorably whether you agree with their politics or not."

Meantime he's pretty much yelling this and he actually attracted some onlookers but he wasn't done he continued

"And you know I'm gonna be shipped off to Iraq for this fucking prick, (he has a girl at home by the way) we ain't fighting shit we're not killing terrorists we're just creating bullshit with a country that has nothing to do with our fight against Al-Queda, and I KNOW that Kerry wants to be there for the military, he's got good plans for them, he was pissed cause Americans were being used in Vietnam and he spoke out against it, and I know he'll be there for them again, and Bush has fucking screwed us over and then he fuckin lies and says that Kerry denied us body armor THAT'S BULLSHIT! I want change I think change is good, I want that fuckin bum out"

Well needless to say I'm starting to wonder why the hell I should be low key about my support of Kerry when you got a guy like my buddy Mike here to tell it like it is with no shame because he has the truth behind him.

I have to say his example has now put me to the point where I'm gonna be much louder about my support for Kerry around the college (it's sort of freeper ville the college of business where I go) but I don't care and I have to say it's thanks to a wild eyed lovable guy......even if he is a Red Sox fan ;)

4. You should be loud and proud of your support for Kerry
I am and other than a few dirty looks, I get nothing but compliments for my Liberal Patriot T-shirt and my Kerry buttons.

I'm glad to hear about your friend. My friend, who happens to be a repug, is a great guy but his family has done business with Bush. Texas oil folk, he even went to b-day parties for the twins. Oddly enough, even he has started to say things like, "why do you assume I am a diehard republican?"

As I say, if we get a fair enough election we win by a landsllide.

7. You're right I'm mostly low key because

I know firsthand how neo-cons think. Most people on here know also how they think to a certain extent, but I was an active Republican before 2000, I know how sick these people are I went to their meetings, I hung out in their groups and these people will pick fights over stupid shit.

I'm not afraid of bodily harm I'm more afraid of some idiot picking a fight with me (yes they are that nutty) and then I wind up putting him on the ground and next thing you know I get expelled or something.

But you are right you are absolutely right NO EXCUSES there is NOTHING shameful about being a Kerry supporter ESPECIALLY when the opposition is backing someone like Bush and Cheney.

So yes I threw a button on my backpack now, my kerry shirt will be worn far more often, and any freeper fratboy that wants to give me shit c'mon down mentally and physically I will not be intimidated.

5. Great story...
I wish my Republican friend would see the light as well... It's gotten so bad with a co-worker that we can't talk politics period. He honestly thinks that Bush is some sort of light to the world. AND he's gay. What is that about? I don't understand.

Kill terrorists. Good.

Kill Iraqi's. Bad.

I feel very sorry for your friend who has to get shipped out for this bullshit.

6. Good for your friend, and good for you,
when I was in college I didn't have any business major friends; they were always against everything I stood for. The social majors hung out together; much more open minded IMO.

I'm glad your friend isn't afraid to tell the truth. Those in the military are the best people to speak out---no one with a shred of decency can call them a traitor.

8. Well for a business college I'd say there is a fairly good liberal base
But the neo con types still far outnumber us, interestingly though every professor I've had has been liberal, and the one conservative professor I had was an Economics professor who was always blasting Bush's unconservative fiscal policies.

9. Thanks for a great story
I know what you mean, I live near San Diego, California and my whole family are Republicans. My father actually toasted Bush on Thanksgiving 2001 (after 9/11) and he was never that political. I think he felt that he had made a good choice of voting for Bush in 2000.

Needless to say, he knows I am a democrat and we just don't talk politics for family peace. Our conversation started with me asking him recently if he would or could actually vote for a man that wouldn't permit funding for stem cell research because of Bush's religious beliefs.

I have had Crohn's Disease for 12 years now and can no longer work and it has severely impacted my life and my father (like all fathers, loves his only daughter and wants her to be well).

Even though stem cell research is in it's preliminary stages ANY disease not just mine could be eradicated and that is worth it.

My father surprised me when in all honesty he said that he couldn't vote for Bush for that reason and went on to say that Bush hasn't respected civil liberties and trashed "his" country. He further added that if we can detain people indefinitely without a trial or legal representation then we are all in grave danger referencing (Guantanamo prisoners).

Although I am still working on selling him on Kerry he has assured me that he won't ever vote for Bush. I just started wearing my "Democrat button" on my sleeve, and it feeeeeeels so good. I too, am going to be more vocal on why I believe that John Kerry should be president. Ordered some signs today too. WOOO HOOOO!!!!!!

BTW I also wanted to say that since I joined DU I've never felt so much love hee hee

15. thats a great story too gelliebeans. were all in this together! and please
thank your father from us

i mean its gotten to the point where you dont expect anyone who either calls themself a republican or voted for bush in 2000 to be halfway rational because of some of the views that you hear from the loudest voices from the right...
maybe its hearing too too much about tucker carlson or bob novak etc!

but people are rational and many can see what destruction is being done. i mean pick any single topic that relates to the president. just one.
and no matter which topic is chosen, this man has not even got that one right

were glad youre here!
