Anyone know much about the Ragin Grannies?

When I was living on Gabriola Island I had the impression the group began there. But I just did a search outta the blue and discovered there are many groups calling themselves that. Does anyone know if they are all the same or just sharing the same name?

I saw one at a march this year in Pittsburgh
