Poll question: Should I get a vasectomy?
I'm done having kids. I feel it's wrong to continue to expect my wife to be solely responsible for birth control. On the other hand, I don't want anyone cutting my sack. What should I do? This poll will decide my fate.

4. It's not so bad
Just find a doctor who uses the "poke a hole" technique rather than an incision.

8. It's simple
Rather than an incision, he merely pokes a hole, rounds up the tubes, and blocks 'em off. No stitches, and I experienced very little discomfort. Sorry, I don't know the official term for the procedure.

6. If My Husband Did It, You Can, Too!!!
Hey, there! My husband had it done 9 years ago, and he is the biggest "baby" about everything. It only took about 15 minutes, and although he did faint afterwards, he lived through it. Infact, I had to go in the room with him when it was done. I joked about it on the way into the doctor's office, saying that, "I just want to make sure that it gets done because if you don't do it (doctor), then I will." Lol! If he (my husband) did it, believe me, you can, too! Personally, I think you deserve a blue ribbon - for thinking of your wife and not just yourself. :yourock:

11. My son (Ya I'm an old fart) had to have it done twice
The first snip didn't work so he had to go in for a repeat. Be a man get in there it can't hurt that much.

13. The REALLY scarey part...
is when the doc says " worst case post-op scenario, your testicles could swell to the size of softballs"

of course they didn't, but I was a bit concerned.
The literature they hand you could be improved.
The grainy photocopy diagram demonstrating where I needed to shave was somewhat misleading. Be sure to clarify. :)

If it says try a jockstrap afterwards for support as you heal.
Forget it.

Have your wife pick out some baggy shorts for you.
Something nice, and HUGE!

Removing the responsibility from her (especially is shes using hormones) forever, should garner you a whole new level of adoration.

14. yes, yes you should
if you're done having kids, why not be sure you're done having kids?

I looked for someone who did reversals, because based on my reading, the reversal is more complex than the vas, so I figured if the doc did reversals, he was probably pretty skilled at the vas part.

Mine was an incision, snip, and cauterization of the snipped ends, then disolvable stitches.

The shaving part is what scared me - he was whipping that razor around faster than I do on my face! :P

That was more than ten years ago, no problems for me at all.

15. My husband had that done after our third child was born.
At first, I was going to get my tubes tied. He was afraid of the operation.

But he talked to several friends who had it, and he was reassured. I would never have guilt tripped him or forced him. He came to his own decision.

I love and respect my husband all the more for doing that.

Dpm't worry so much. Everyone has the jitters about surgery, but this is not as big a thing as you think.

If you do this, you are more of a man than some I know.

18. Yeah, do it!
I did, with no pain, no swelling, very little discomfort, and a whole lifetime of disposable income and not having to put valuable things on high shelves to look forward to!

Plus, I think sex is more enjoyable now, because there's no potential for an unwanted pregnancy niggling in the back of my mind.

19. If you're sure you are done with kids
... and if your wife is, too - go for it. But take your time again to think about it. You have only odd chances to have it redone.

The procedure itself isn't too bad - just some days of slight discomfort. But it's a big psychological thing. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without kids and still in the "family rising" age section unless he is very, very certain.

The advantages are big - no more worries, no mess or no pills for your wife. Your wife will love you for taking up the responsibility!

22. Mr Belle did it.
We had all sorts of conversations first. Basically, he said he felt 'done' no matter what, where I felt I was pretty sure I was done, but not ready to close off my options yet because you never know what will happen in life (or maybe I did know our marriage was falling apart and didn't want to close off my options) and I felt too young to make that decision yet (I was 30 when he had it done, he was almost 40). Besides, surgically, it's easier for the man and he was back to being fully functioning a day and a half later. Two years later, he doesn't regret it and neither do I.
