32. communications is really a front for social psychology
When I started my teaching credential program I after earning my communications degree the research and theories in learning were familiar to me. Anybody studying to be a teacher should take some social psychology courses. Also anyone studying to be a politician or propagandist should take some social psych courses as well.

The most useless degree I encountered as a manager of a juvenile hall was criminal justice studies. What a waste.

That includes:

communications
marketing
accounting
graphics design
performing arts
creative writing
several things that go under "IT" (mechanics vs engineering)

There's a whole host of shit that's turned our universities into expensive vocational schools, for people who want a better starting resumé.

43. Heh heh, Sociology
When I first went to college I was "undeclared". Then I discovered I liked Sociology so I decided to major in that. Then I decided I liked Psychology so I became a double-major.

I later had to drop out due to financial difficulties, and even later on I moved to a different state. When I finally resumed college I simply majored in Psycholgy and made Sociology a minor.

Either way my education was useless in and of itself. It is only a stepping-stone to graduate school.

11. I think that most majors can be useful
That major would only be useful in certain circles, of course, and be seen as an impediment in others.
Most majors in academic majors prove that you can do reasearch, write, and think. Some companies are open to hiring people with a variety of majors.
Other majors are more career oriented. They are very useful if you really do seek employment in that particuliar field. They usually include very specific technical courses. I don't know if companies make negative assumptions of applicants with such majors that apply for jobs outside of that field.

19. Don't discount it - if he's good, let him go for it
When I worked for a major consulting firm, we had college grads coming in at $60,000, $100,000, or more per year with degrees in history, literature, art history, philosophy, etc.

Of course, that's taking one's degree and moving into business with it, but most corporations don't care so much about what degree you have (unless you are looking to do something specific, like be an engineer or scientist or accountant or lawyer, etc.), they care about how well you did and, most importantly, what leadership you showed in college.

We had quite a few consultants who never got their MBA, either. We had medical doctors, phycisists, mathematicians, economists, etc. all working as consultants.

Same with investment banks. In fact, when I was working at an investment bank, I found that they prefer their incoming brokers to not necessarily have much experience or training in business, so that they can mold and train them their own way. And those are guys who can end up making millions and millions of dollars every year.

21. Yes, it is better to major in something that can give you a high GPA
There were companies recruiting on campus that offered good salaries to people with a variety of majors if they had potential which to them meant a high GPA, usually over 3.5. I had a lower GPA because I had majored in something that was not as easy for me, Biology. I only got one A- in biology with the rest being lower. I got higher grades in literature, history, anthropology, and government classes. I would have probably got a 3.5 or higher if I had majored in any of those subjects instead. It would have made me eligible for one of those jobs. The key to getting those jobs is getting a high GPA, being involved in leadership positions in campus activities, and interviewing as a senior in college.

26. Thats why GPA should have a degree of difficulty multiplyer added to it...
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 02:57 PM by Endangered Specie
Just like diving, someone who makes a 9.5 off a 1/2 flip dive shouldnt equal someone who makes a 9.5 off a 3.5 backflip pikes inward tuck etc...

someone with a 3.5 In say, Engineering, Physics or Biochem shouldnt be ranked lower than someone with a 3.9 in, say, Sociology, Communication, or BasketWeaving

18. Hmm..
my political science B.A. is pretty much useless right now; it just allows me to offer political pontification with some vague sense of "official" expertise. Now I'm back in school for a two-year radiography degree; job security, good pay, can't be outsourced.. good times ahead. At least the B.A. will come-in handy later when applying for management positions..

20. Education Majors.
Teaching how to teach... riight, too bad they forget the part about teaching education majors the MATERIAL, of what they are to teach... Looking at my schools degree Curriculms, I can see that Math-concentration Education majors take about as much math as a Biology major! :wtf:

If you wanna teach, major in your teaching subject, then get a teaching license.

25. Does topology help you teach 4th grade math?
I would think that well-taught coursework on child development and applied educational theory would be more helpful.

I mean, 4th grade math teachers teach children how to divide. 8th grade math teachers prepare children to take basic algebra by helping them understand the concept of terms and unknowns. I don't know that advanced math helps this at all.

28. marine biology
there are very few jobs available that pay well to people who hold BS degrees in marine biology (a dirty little secret they never bothered to tell me). Masters degree at minimum to make even a decent living, not that I am in it for the money. If you manage to find an entry level job, there is no hope for advancement without an advanced degree. I work for a state agency in Texas and I am the lowest on the totem pole. I really want to move up so I am working towards an MS. In the meantime, I apply for more advanced jobs in my agency and, although I believe I am well-qualified, I never even get an interview anymore!!! I would think that working somewhere for a while would give you a foot in the door so to speak but not here. They don't give a rat's ass about us technicians (most of whom have BS degees and are really interested in moving up). Everybody else they have special leadership classes for, training in various areas preparing them for advancement. But not us techs. It sucks big time. When I leave (and it is only a matter of time) I am going to be completely honest as to why, in the hopes that they might realize that morale among technicians is in the toilet because they do not appreciate us in any meaningful way. Sorry for the rant but this has bothered me for a while.
