Anyone know anything about mammogram results?
I had one done last month, I need to go back on Monday to get the right breast re-done. Apparently there was some sort of problem, and they need to do it again. This normally wouldn't be TOO alarming, but they also want to do an ultrasound. What could this mean? Why the ultrasound? Should I be overly concerned?

I'm very good at being overly concerned, but after the bad news we've had here this week, I'm a little exhausted.

1. No idea; I've been putting it off.
Best of luck to you, though.

The ultrasound is pretty routine
I've had one done, too. And I haven't even ever had a mammogram done (not old enough--yet).

I wouldn't worry. Ultrasounds are very much standard operating procedure nowdays. Just a different way of looking.

3. Do you have a lump?
I had a benign cyst once that they had to take a second look at with an ultrasound. I'm sorry you're going through this, I know how stressful it is.

Plus you've got that neck thing. Ugh.

8. I don't have a lump, that I know of.
The original mammo had results that were somehow inconclusive, so they want to re-do it and get a better look. That would be fine, but adding the sonogram is what had me concerned. Well, time will tell, I guess.

4. I had to get one redone
a few years ago and they did an ultrasound. They weren't sure of what they were seeing and it turned out to be some cysts. I had the choice of aspiration or leaving them alone until they bothered me. I just let it be. The one I had done last year was ok.

5. Don't worry - been there done that
Since my mother had breast cancer I am closely watched. I have had 9 biopsies and numerous call backs which also included some ultrsounds. Better to be safe. So far - all mine have been OK.

By the way - My mother is 86 and had a double mastechtomy in 1970.

10. So glad to hear about your mom's success!
My mom had breast cancer in 2001, & she had one of her breasts removed. She has been seeing an oncologist monthly, as well as having a monthly mammogram, ever since. However, on her last visit two months ago, her doctor told her she was completely in the clear & that her next visit would be in 2005! She's doing great. :)

6. mammogram sometimes not conclusive
ultrasound gives them different data. Ask about an MRI. My sis had a bad report on one breast from mammogram but it showed the other one was OK, but the other one was where she found lump, had discharge, etc, so the mammogram tech called a specialist and they did the MRI. It showed a different type of tumor in the breast the mammogram showed nothing on. Turns out, both were cancerous, but with different kinds of cancer tumors. What one test missed, the other caught, thank goodness.

Hope you come out in the clear, but don't take a mammogram as the whole truth, ever!

Good luck.

7. Relax, They asked me last
year to re-do my test and I freaked. BUT, they are probably asking because your breast tissue maybe too dense. When the breast tissues are too dense, it's hard to read through a mamogram.

9. Don't be alarmed, bunny.
Last year, I had to have 3 retakes while I was still at the mammogram center. After the retakes I had to have an ultrasound of my left breast, which was done by the doctor. Because it was my first mammogram (I'm a chicken), they had no other mammograms with which to compare it, so I was told to go back in 6 months. They suspected the few tiny spots were calcium deposits, but they would compare the two mammograms after my next one to be sure. It turned out to be fine. I was told by the technician that it's very common to have re-takes. Good luck. :)

13. Been there, done that
I had to get an ultra sound in 2000 because there was something on the mammogram that wasn't clear. They did an ultrasound to get a better picture.

Turned out to be a watery cyst. I could have had it aspirated but I chose not to. It's not a big deal.

15. I had the same experience, essentially, that jrthin describes, and

I've had the experience twice, so far. So. . . perhaps the new rule is that if they have any question about a mammogram, they want a second mammogram plus an ultrasound.

It's good that they're extra-cautious except that it rattles your nerves when you're the subject of their caution!

Edit: Same as jrthin because they blamed it on dense tissue. Hmmpf! As if I had dense tissue on purpose!

16. If you haven't had one within the past five years of this one -
chances are they just want to make sure of the baseline. Lots of us get non-cancerous fibroid cysts or have a fairly normal "hard area" or scar tissue from, say, a muscular injury to the shoulder or pec muscle in our breast area, and without an accurate baseline, these can be mis-diagnosed as cancerous tumors. That, or there was a possiblity of a false "shadow" effect because one getting a mammogram is never really quite steady or still while they're doing all that compression.

It's probably nothing. I had to get another test on one side the first time I had a mammogram because I kept shifting my feet, thus my body, while my breast and armpit was being squeezed in that vise.

And then, of course, there's the genetic pre-disposition to benign diet and stress-related fibroid cysts in my mom's family. Those always show up, and every couple years the doctors have to call up old film to verify that those spots are not tumors.

I felt sure it was no big deal, it's nice to have that reinforced by your stories. Thanks all!
