Top 4 things I heard on The Ride today
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 10:22 PM by BiggJawn
4. "Sure is hot, isn't it?"

3."Who picked these hills and why are there so many of 'em?"

2. "How OLD is that bike, anyway?"

And the Numero Uno thing heard today....
"Wow, that's a BRIGHT orange jersey!"

We were supposed to have storms today, so I had rain gear packed. Instead, it was a mostly sunny day, high of 87, humidity around 80% heat index almost 100....

Sorry to say that I failed the 100 mile attempt. Combination of heat, humidity, ass-kicking hills, not drinking enough (1/2 a gallon in 2 hours wasn't enough???) and Le Bonk left me out of gas and crisp around the edges at 53 miles.

I didn't pack any sunscreen....

Sure liked the comments I got on Le Maillot L'Orange, though...

1. 53 miles??
Wow! That's incredible, whether you reached the 100 mile mark or not.

In stark contrast, I sat on my behind all day, albeit to study for law school. You definitely had the more rewarding experience. :P

Congrats!

3. I'll remember that when you're billing $300,000 a year...
..and I'm digging in dumpsters for cold french fries, cursing Alan Pondscum...:7

My previous Personal Best was 33 miles. I think 53 is a nice number, seeing's how this was my first time trying something like this.

It was fun, and thank you!

You know I'm teasing about the 300 kilobucks bit, dontcha?

2. A rider's odometer is not as important as their spirit
You almost rode a metric under crappy conditions.

4. I really wanted that Metric, but alas, not today...
The first 50 miles were on strange roads, but at 50, I was in my "playground" so I was able to benchmark performance.

A short rise that I normally take at 13 MPH and no more than 140 BPM was going by at 9 and the HRM was taching out at 170 plus...

I think I'm getting hooked on distance riding....

5. I understand the joy of it.
I can generally only manage a metric under optimal circumstances any more, but I still enjoy watching that much world roll by in one sitting.

6. 53 miles is damn good.

I get winded going for one mile. :(

Then again, I'm 16 and have used my bike since third grade. That is what, 7 years? It was a cheap $40-50 bike, and it has a rusty chain, the gears are stuck, the brakes are shot, and the tires go flat at least once a weak.

I'd probably get more distance if I bought a new bike. :P

Btw, a metric is 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) right?

11. No, unfortunately...
We went 25 miles to the East, then turned West, and climbed out of the valley onto the flats and had that hot-ass Sirocco in my face all the way home...

I don't think I EVER had the wind shift to help me....
