The song "Gloria" holds the Billboard record for most weeks on the Top 100
Ok, it might not anymore. But at one time it did. If any of you recall that time, the song came out and was a hit in dance clubs. It entered the Top 100 and stayed pretty low for quite a while--70's or so. Then, all of a sudden, it got radio airplay and shot up the charts. I think--all told--it was on the charts for like 26 weeks. It was a weird situation because most songs either make it big, or die quickly. "Gloria" took a very different route. I can't recall the exact numbers, and I'm too lazy to look it up just now.

7. I love the Shadows' and Them's versions equally
They both gave different takes on the song. Either way, you know she wasn't going up there to study or for a chat.

8. Ohh yeah-everything's gonna be alright this mornin'
I hung out in Piper's Alley one year with Tom, the Shadows of Knight drummer. I was about 17, and a mod then. All mod.

9. Oh wow, that is so cool
Were you playing in a band then too? I'd love to hear stories.

I'm a huge, as you've probably gathered by now, '60s garage rock fan.:hi:

17. Yep, and I always competed for First Chair Percussion starting 1964
in Milwaukee. Plus, I was hanging out with older folks-college kids, heh, heh,heh...Eventually I became part of an Upper Mid-West music scene and the drummer in the tragic Milwaukee band Clockwork Orange-our 18 year old bass player was shot and died and our guitarist shot in what was ruled a "death by misadventure" and a major blow to my trust in humanity...for decades I stayed out of music-but the music is in me, truly it is...I come from a musical family...Btw, my wife, Charron, plays bass (72 Fender Precision) we are The Books Banned (currently in need of lead instrument player) we play "music to get pregnant to..." lol.

4. There are three different songs by that name I can think of...
From the 50s/60s...

Gloria
It's not Marie
Gloria
It's not Sheree
Gloria
But she's not in love
With me

From the 60's/70s:
She makes me feel so good
She makes me feel alright.
And her name is G-L-O-R-I,I,I,I..
G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)
G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)
I'm gonna shout it all night (Gloria)
I'm gonna shout it every day (Gloria)

5. Your memory is better than mine! But, while surfing this morning, I
noticed that a lot of news sites have the headline: "Gloria" Singer Dead at 47. They must figure we're all thinking of the same song immediately!

10. You left out one from the 80's
From a little known Irish band....

I try to sing this song loud
I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet
I try, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete

Gloria, in te domine
Gloria, exultate
Gloria, Gloria
Oh Lord, loosen my lips

I try to sing this song loud
I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there
You let me in

Gloria, in te domine
Gloria, exultate
Oh Lord, if I had anything
Anything at all
I'd give it to You
I'd give it to You

Gloria
In te domine
Gloria
Gloria

12. According to my Billboard top 40 book
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 12:07 PM by slim
"Gloria" entered the top 40 on 9/4/82 and peaked at #2, where it stayed for three weeks. The song was on the Top 40 chart for 22 weeks.

Other charted Laura Branigan songs:

"Solitare" (1983)
"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" (1983)
"Self Control" (1984)
"The Lucky One" (1984)
"Spanish Eddie" (1985)
"Power of Love" (1988) ... this song was later covered by Celine Dion.

13. Was Laura of German descent? Does it say that in the book anywhere?
For some reason I recall that, although I may be confusing her with someone else.

15. It just says she was born in Brewster, New York. Former backing vocalist
with Leonard Cohen. Acted on the TV show "CHIPS" and in the 1984 film "Mugsy's Girl".

That's all it says.

Sorry about the late reply.

16. No problem--maybe Im thinking she was like Donna Summer--moved
over there as a teen and started performing there and got some notoriety before making it big here.

Thanks for the info. I have her greatest hits CD--plan on playing it later. What a crime--only 47.

14. Van Morrison remade his own with John Lee Hooker
That was the best self-cover ever, in 1993.
