6. I think what happened was...
that nobody in the crowd really expected anything other than polite applause, but when there started to be booing I think people wised up and started to counteract it.

9. yeah
It sounded like there were boos for the Bush daughters as well, but they appeared in a video, not live like the Kerry daughters, so you couldn't really hear the audience while they spoke.

2. You wouldn't think that would happen
seems like the place would be full of a pretty liberal bunch of people.

4. Yeah, that was confusing....
Were they booing the Kerry girls? Or were they booing the Bush girls? That was weird. I'd find it hard to believe that many young people would be actively booing the Kerry girls, but never underestimate the stupidity of any group of americans.

15. to be fair
They did not "block out the crowd." The Bush daughters appeared in a pre-recorded video, the Kerry daughters were there live, so of course you could hear the audience more with them. I doubt it was some deliberate effort to subconsciously influence young voters. I would figure most of the people there are too wrapped up in scoring good dope and an after-party invite to care about those chicks on stage yapping about voting and responsibility and whatever else.

The darker haired Kerry said "We hope you'll vote for our father."

11. People would want to hear the message don't make noise...
people who choose to remain ignorant will boo. Those who boo will always be heard, but they will never boo their way into the hearts of the American public.

12. There is a very good chance that. . .
. . .the Bush girls were on video screens that the crowd could see but we could not see at home and they were getting boo'ed. I am sure journalist in attendance will report on that.

14. Regardless it was awkward and I see. . .
. . .flacks from both campaigns giving MTV an earful right now. How do I know that. . .I am flack.

22. Because most likely MTV begged them to be on the show. . .
. . .and promised it will be real good exposure (ESPECIALLY THE BUSH TWINS). I have been in that position before. You are trying to pick and choose your opportunities and MTV comes along, higher ups are telling you no, but MTV persists. Trust me. . .I doubt either campaign was too enthusiastic about the appearances (especially the Bush campaign), and MTV probably had to sell them on it.

I would have given them a terse "you will never get them again." Of course it would be an empty threat because the next time I needed their target market I would be all over it. Oh the life of a flack.

25. heh
I imagine some poor intern or lowly staff assistant somewhere, whoever answered the phone, getting yelled at by the Kerry people. Too funny.

I'm guessing the Bush campaign agreed on the condition that they appear only by video. Bush isn't in NYC yet, so the idea that the twins are up there supporting him, well...they could've made a trip down to FL. I'm not faulting them for not doing so, just that I'm sure the Bush people were not going to let them appear live at such an event or risk whatever little story their appearance at after parties might result in.

I could hear the audience a little bit during the Bush daughters tape, and it did sound like people were still booing.

17.  Kerry girls could've smiled. And the shhh gesture was not cool
I mean how hard is it to say, "hey everyone, how you doing?" which they didn't. I don't get it. They were groovy. They get a C.

21. I agree
That shh thing and the "settle down, this is important" or whatever she said was so....school teacher-ish, not exactly the way to reach out to an MTV audience.

I wonder what sort of instructions they were given beforehand. I'm guessing they just wanted the daughters to show up, encourage voting, and be gone, so perhaps they were somewhat restricted in what they could say when the booing started. Another possibility is that they were just caught off guard and surprised by the booing and didn't really know how to respond.

27. That was the easiest crowd to win over. Just feign a little excitement,
Hello Miami! Great to be here! Just be a little cordial. Maybe even wear a sexier dress (we certainly know Vanessa has one) put on a little lip gloss. Be more event-appropriate. Oh well, we all know this is not that important in the scheme of things but it is... a missed opportunity and missed opp. add up.

like The Rolling Stones than AC/DC. Cold Hard Bitch sure seems to share a lot in common with Honky Tonk Woman.
