Would you ever consider legally changing your name?

I've given it serious consideration, but it seems like it would be a huge pain having to go through the process of getting all my legal documents re-issued, blech.

2. I thought about it a few years ago.

I considered changing my name back to what it was before my grandfather shortened it during the 1920's. I decided to keep it the way it is. I won't say what my name is, but lemme tell ya, it's got zip!

I never thought of looking at it that way!

I was adopted by a stepfather when I was six and no one asked my views on it (I would have said no). So I lived from six to 21 with a last name that really wasn't mine. I used to call it "my slave name" (I wasn't very PC, was I?).

So when I married at 21, I was more than happy to take my husband's name. I loved him dearly and couldn't wait to shed my "slave name."

I am still married to and in love with him. If I had still had MY actual maiden name, though, I probably would have kept it.

6. what's the big deal? approx 1/2 the population does it upon . . .

marriage, anyway?!! no fuss, no bother. others change their names merely because their name of origin is hard to pronounce, hard to spell, etc., etc. some do it via the courts, others do not (there's no legal requirement to change it with a court order, btw) . . . and, oh, yeah . . . then there's divorce, some women change their names upon divorce too . . so . . .

what's the beef?

I really want to do it but I'd have to get all my student aid papers re-issued, student and state ID's, drivers license, allllllllll my financial records...

it might be worth it though :) i have a really difficult to pronounce last name i'd love to get shortened

12. well, this is not the correct place to give legal advice . . .

however, it's not as hard as what you think it would be . . . being a family law attorney I've had many clients who've opted to change their names. However, this is DU and I can only say to you, ask the advice of an attorney. It would clear the air for you.

The middle name (Guillermo Jarvis) comes from the fact that I love the name Guillermo and Jarvis is my nickname.

My last name I will never change.

22. yeah i am considering it now, since my identity was stolen

my name dob and ssn were stolen-probably from my hospital records. the FBI has been unsuccessful in find the thief in my case or in the case of another cancer patient who was treated in the same facility.

since my credit was trashed due to the old catastrophic-illness-while-uninsured health care program i was on at the time of my ER DIAGNOSIS of cancer (the fastest growing way people are finding out about their cancers), they opened a checking acct in my name at Key bank. after a month, they called up BOA. after the criminals gave my info, the BOA moran said "Why, mlle_chatte, you HAVE an acct!" "Really?" says the faux me. "Why, change the address and send me an order of checks!" "Gladly!" replies the homunculus hired by BOA to give away MY CHECKING ACCT. They proceeded to party in Seattle and Las Vegas in my name.

here's the shittiest irony about this story. i used to investigate cc fraud, for the pinheads aka "Nordstrom". For more than 15 years i have shredded and/or burned all my named trash-much to the amusement of my friends and family members. "You're SOOOO paranoid!" they'd giggle, point and laugh. it's like my cancer irony-quit smoking, be a vegetarian, get a GI cancer. i have told many i think i will win lotto at this rate as long as i continue to not buy tickets.

so anyway i called everyone i need to call, the FTC, SSA, the cops (there's a whole special fight story in that little report there too) the 3 credit bureaus. the USPS and Office of the Special Investigator of the Social Security Admin as well as the SPD are all on the case. they know who did this.

so yes, i am considering a name and SSN # change. and even though the SSA does not LIKE to change SSNs, even though they are paying me disability, i am a 'special case' and they would do that for me...

do i want the hassle? hell no. but if they start using my info again, that may be my only recourse, aside from murder

but it's blown over. during may and june, i wanted to hunt them down and punish them. i had a phone number they put on my checks. they were saying they were ME so they could verify stuff, and i would spend hours loading up the voice mail with music and swearing and tv shows.:evilgrin:
the name change thing was very intense then...i've got a new name picked, but the urgency has melted away...

27. if you have proof that someone else has used your SSN

then they WILL change it-reluctantly...i think it has to do with the transfer of info and for that reason, i am very reluctant to request that-i can just picture a whole new 'mlle_chatte screwfest' happening behind that.

they won't consider it if it has been stolen, but not used

i understand if one is fleeing domestic violence and has an agency working on one's behalf, it will be done then as well.

they WILL NOT change if you have filed and discharged a bankruptcy.

i have all of my accts, including phone, cable, isp, *checking* and SSN password protected now.

and what i would do is add my mom's name to the front of my name. i thought of changing the last name but-eh-i like the one i've had.

the credit bureaus were a combo of good and evil...the best was TransUnion, the worst, CBI-Equifax, the fastest, Experion.

Identity, or true name fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes in this country. the fact that the industry that foments credit is so ill-equipped to handle the onslaught makes it more and more attractive. to the CBRs, i am just 1 of millions, and i need to adhere to their rules (all three have different rules) to get my files flagged, to get the bad inquiries off, to have the fraud warnings extended from 60-90 days to the more desirable 7 years.

i had to be immersed and very proactive, and the law enforcement people complimented me on my force of personality, because that is the only way i got them to look at it.
i made a big deal of it because it was an extensive ring, and the other cancer patient and i had poor prognoses (which were in error) when our info was stolen.
believe me...if i had been as ill when i was receiving treatment, or dying, i wouldn't have given a shit about people doing this. that is why they did it. and that's why i'll hound these POSs til they die. or i do.

30. I think I am (sort of).

Within the next 6-12 months, I'll be divorced. I have kids so I don't think I'll completely go back to by maiden name, but it's a short one, so I think I'll hyphenate. If I, (Lord help me at this point, but that's a bit of a digression :crazy:) were ever to remarry, I'll probably change my name just to have a complete and total fresh start. Kids or not, I don't think I'd want to carry one man's name (even in part) and be married to another.
