Reno 911 - Why is this TRIPE on the air?
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 10:27 PM by UdoKier
I'm deeply puzzled as to why Comedy Central continues to produce the mindnumbingly unfunny "Reno 911!"

Does ANYONE watch this crap?

And it's on like 12 times EVERY DAY!

See the one guy in short-shorts? He's hilarious - just because he wears short-shorts! Is that hilarious or what?

Oh yeah, it's totally not.

COMEDY CENTRAL!!! CANCEL THIS LOSER NOW!!!!!!

That being said, I respectfully disagree.

3. I LOVE THAT SHOW
This is the 2nd season. It's really funny and it's a goof on Cops. Deputy Dangle explains that he had to get special permission from the Sheriff to wear the shorty shorts. He said he needs freedom of movement, etc. It's a group of actors who basically do unscripted skits. I think it is an absolute scream. I"m sorry you don't like it. :(

13. I have watched on many occasions and WAITED for someething remotely funny
It NEVER comes.

Maybe my standards are too high.

Lucy - Funny

Honeymooners - Hilarious

Jackie Gleason Show - Hilarious

Carol Burnett - Hilarious

SNL in good years - Funny

All in the Family - Hilarious

Cosby - saccharine and unfunny

ALF - worse than anything in Abu Ghraib

Roseanne - Funny, often inspired

Simpsons- hilarious

Beavis & Butthead - Funny

Seinfeld - amusing

Friends - forgettable

That's my Bush! - Stupefyingly unfunny

Futurama - Hilarious

Chapelle's Show - guilty-pleasure - funny

Reno 911! - It's not a parody of Cops, it IS Cops, with a couple of exaggerated idiosyncrasies. It's so boring. I'd rather watch Futurama any day.

I have a sense of humor. Most of these shows are funny.

I get the feeling Comedy Central subjects us to tons of reruns of this stinker (as well as that POS of a show Dave Atelle does) because they are extremely cheaply produced, and they don't have to pay the amateur comedians on the show very much!

20. So anyone who likes this has low standards?
Now now. Let's not get didactic.

As far as being "amateur comedians..."

Well, no. These people have been in the business for years.

22. I'm taking swipes at a show I find agony to watch. I know tastes vary.
This is more of a rant than a serious thread. This show has been bugging me for weeks. I'll turn on the set, looking forward to a funny episode of "South Park" and get a big-time let-down when they show "Reno".

There's obviously an angle to this show that some folks find funny - hilarious, it seems.

I just needed to rant and trash this show just this one time. It has thrown a wet blanket on my comedy evening so many times.

I really am happy for people who like it. I personally hate it.

I have a lot of friends who hate SNL. I thought it was pretty funny the last few years until they let Will Farrell go... So yeah, tastes vary.

Just let me have my rant, okay!

I've been in the comedy business to long. I tend to prematurely leap into opportunities to argue comedy theory.

Rant away.

6. This show is infinitely more humorous than any shit com on networks.
If you don't get it, merely change the channel. Evidently lots of people like it because it got renewed.

Me,...sir...

I'm oh so very sorry and apologise for my poor taste, but I think it is one of the funnier things on the air right now. Obviously, you are correct, though, since the show airs a mere 12 times a day, which means no one must be watching!!!

17. I suppose it's good that some are defending this "show"
so I guess Comedy Central isn't wasting their money...

My wife hates that show too.

As for "Cops", I also hate that show. It seems very sick and exploitative...

I pretty much hate all reality shows...

Maybe I've just watched enough COPS reruns to find Reno 9/11 the most hilarious original, running sitcom on television.

10. Funny you should mention that show
because of The Daily Show, I've been catching Reno 911 more often and it has really grown on me. It cracks me the hell up. Seems to make fun of the show COPS, poke fun at the stereotypes of real cops, and make social commentary at the same time.

Few things make me laugh out loud. Reno 911 and the Daily Show are two of them.

And like the first poster said, humor is HIGHLY subjective. A lot of Reno is quite silly and if you don't like silly/absurd, you aren't ever going to like it.

So I suggest you don't watch it.

19. I fucking LOVED The State!
Don't know if you ever got to see it, but Viva Variety also was brilliant. Odd "European" variety show with Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kinney and Michael Ian Black (as the amazingly stupid Johnny Blue Jeans). The show originated in a sketch on The State.

And I love the show. Its fucking hysterical.

FYI, Lt. Dangle is funny for many reasons, only one of which is that he wears short shorts. Thomas Lennon is a great improv comedian, his last show Viva Variety (with Kerri Kinney) was also hysterical. Sorry you don't get the joke.

This season, not as funny, but still better than most of what's on TV.

21. Sometimes I think
people get hung up on the whole "parody" of Cops angle and miss out on what this show is really about.

Very distinctive characters slipping in ultra-tight social commentary under the rather broad comedic setting of a Cops parody. I find it consistently excellent myself.

There is a great "ride along" scene in one of the more recent episodes where Dangle and Jr are musing about the increasing ugliness of American society. "With meth addict moms doing phone sex in the basement etc..."

Dangle concludes this increasingly bleak monologue on America, saying something like "This is the worst country in the world."

Unbelievably funny.

It's a good show. But hey, everyone has got something they just inexplicably hate. Mine is Johnny Depp.

25. I don't hate Depp. But I did think he was overrated for the longest time.
I think he's finally starting to live up to all the hype of 15 years ago.

Maybe I didn't like him so much because he was too pretty.

I don't much care for Harrison Ford in anything he's done since the Fugitive either.

But others love him. Go fugure.

Ugh. Not because of that dreck, Pirates of the Carribean?
He peaked with Ed Wood.

Harrison Ford will almost always get a pass from me just because he is in my two favorite movies of all time. (not the best, but my favorite)

But I digress.

31. "Pirates" was dreck, but Depp was very good in it.
and Ed Wood was great fun, too.

There is a certain "posey" quality about his performances, but he clearly takes his work seriously and makes a sincere effort at every part.

He's no different than John Malkovich. But Malkovich isn't as pretty so he gets more cred...

I think what bugs me about Depp is that he takes his work a little too seriously.

You're acting Johnny, not ascending to heaven on wings of divine importance...

23. I must say
Sometimes I am amused by Reno 911. Many times I find it funny, but not enough to make me laugh hysterically. BUt every show has moments that make me laugh hysterically...at least that I've seen.

And I definitely disagree with your analysis of Seinfeld and Insomniac with Dave Attel. Seinfeld was much more than amusing. One of the few sitcoms that has made me laugh hysterically in pretty much every episode.

And Insomniac...what can I say about Insomniac? If you don't think it's funny, at least you get to see all these different cool places, some of which I'll never be able to get to. I love it.

27. I would have liked Seinfeld more...
...except that I disliked the characters a little more than I was comfortable with. The talent and writing were amazing, but basically all of the characters were borderline sociopaths.

Comedy that makes light of modern-day cynicism and callousness to the point of almost making it "cool" disturbs me a bit.

But I won't argue that "Seinfeld" was a brilliantly executed show with a great cast. It was.

34. Funniest show on the air -
I have NEVER laughed so hard as I have during this show. The improv is incredible and the quirky characters are brilliant. It is one of those shows that some people get and some people don't. Humor is such a weird thing. One of my bosses goes around telling jokes all day and I just kind of roll my eyes to myself(he's my boss so I HAVE to act like I think he's funny)....the jokes he tells are like this....."a guy goes into a bar...yada,yada,yada...some people like this type of humor. I totally don't. I think that Reno 911 is in the same arena as "Best in Show," "Waiting for Guffman," etc. It's for people who have a certain type of sense of humor.
