11. My favorite line from that film is so appropriate today:
"If Jesus came back and saw what people were doing in his name, he'd never stop throwing up." :D

5. sorry, Woody Allen is a has-been and a perveret
don't mean to piss on your parade, but the man disgusts me.

His movies have been total dogshit for years now.

The last good one was "Bullets over Broadway", they've been unbearable since then.

And he fucked his stepdaughter.

18. she was 16 years old.
and the daughter of the woman he was involved with for many many years.

a grown man romancing and marrying the teenage daughter of his girlfriend, roommate, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, significant other, life partner, bitch or whoever, is still a child molestor.

it ain't right.

she was 21 when the nude pics of her were taken. I never heard they'd been having an affair for 5 years at that point. She was 27 when she married him.

And his movies have indeed sucked for years -- last good one that I saw was Crimes and Misdemeanors.

8. Thanks for sharing!
To get back to the thread, "Annie Hall" is still my favorite; the scene w/ Marshall McLuhan is probably my favorite in any of his films.

"What's Up Tiger Lilly" is hysterical, too; Allen redubbed a pedestriam Japanese spy film w/ his own dialouge; I have to see that again..

9. Those are my two favorites, also!
"Annie Hall" was pure genius, as was "Tiger Lily" in its time. These are the two Allen movies that I had to see over & over.

31. He creeps me out too
I wouldn't call him a child molester, but his relationship with Mia Farrow's daughter was emotional incest. He may not have legally been her father, but he was the only father figure she had. It's just plain creepy. Plus, has anyone noticed that he continues to get older, but the women in his movies stay the same age? He'll be 70 next year, but his leading ladies the last 10 years have all been in their 20's or 30's. Puhleeezzz!

So many great films. I have been on a Woody kick lately. Oh, also Love and Death and Take the Money and Run.

A freaking genius indeed.

24. Hate to say this, but what else could she do but marry him?
She had nowhere else to go. Lost her adoptive family over this thing. She was literally alone in the world.

30. Well, if you shack up with your mom's ex-lover, you probably
aren't going to be too popular with your siblings -- and rightly so.

Put yourself in her mother's shoes, for God's sake. How would you feel if it happened to you?

27. What else could she do?
Oh, I don't know, maybe live off her father's fortune? She didn't have to marry him and it's silly to aver she did. She was a bright, well-educated young woman from a very wealthy family. Marriage was not her "way out of the gutter".

32. I stand by what I say
Allen took advantage of a young and naive -- and stupid, I might add -- girl with few options ... which doesn't negate his value as an artist by the way. There are a lot of great artists who do, and have done, awful things. I've watched many an Allen movie in my day -- Crimes and Misdemeanors is one of my favorite films. Although come on, you have to admit it -- the guy hasn't done a decent film in years. Maybe he's just shot his wad, I don't know. He certainly has his place in the film canon, but recently ... nah.

34. Correct
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 11:35 AM by Dookus
it has nothing to do with his value as an artist.

I thought "Sweet and Lowdown" was one of his best. I also enjoyed "Small Time Crooks". Both were done in the last 5 years.

People have been saying for decades that "he hasn't had a good movie in years" and then he comes out with a great one. He's one of the most prolific filmmakers we have, and I find something to love in even the least of his movies.

on edit: Why do you stand by the assertion that she HAD to marry him?
