Yikes! Giant pussies!
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 10:08 PM by Jen6
So I noticed that my coworker was putting together a children's book that included some photos of Maine Coons (on white backdrops). I said "I have one of those! He's great; gentle, sweet natured, and getting to be pretty big, though no where near full grown. They're huge cats". My coworker said "Well, they don't LOOK huge". So, tonight I went looking for some photos to send him, and found a couple of photos of my kitty Oberon's grandfather that I hadn't seen before. Oh my!

Obie's other grandfather and grandmother:

Oberon can fill a chair pretty well, but he's got four years of growing yet to do:

5. Oberon has produced a couple
that you wouldn't want to step on with bare feet. Ewwww!

Right now, he's a SHAVED PUSSY! I had to have him shaved because of 11 days without electricy..in Florida..in August (we were hit by Charley).

Oberon's only half grown, and weighs 14 pounds already!

The largest Maine Coon (world record holder for largest domestic cat) is 46 pounds! You can see him at the Guiness website.

we had some at our animation studio when we were working on the movie "Aladdin". They would indeed crawl under your desk and romp around like any other kitten. So cute!
If you ever visit Tampa, you MUST visit Big Cat Rescue. You can play with bobcat, lynx, sevals, and Caracals, plus feed dozens of tigers, lions, leopards, etc. It's a wonderful time for any wildlife lover!

His name is Mr. Rum Tum Tugger and he's huge and a huge wuss! he's the sweetest big guy I have. He was 11 pounds at 7 months old, now he weighs in at an incredible 22 pounds of pure love. Although he doesn't take to kindly to our new kitten!

30. I'm such a sap
Can't resist more kittens! A co-worker dropped her in hubby's lap and said, "If you don't take her, she will go to the pound!"

Needless to say. "done deal".

Tugger just wasn't ready for "babysitting duty" but I think he will get used to her. He's not mean, but tells her that he's not interested. She is most brave however and takes the "put 'em up put 'em up!" stance.

She's quickly become mama's girl and sits on my lap while I'm on the computer and just purrs away. Funny how they worm their way into your heart so quickly!

I'm the proud mama of 4 wonderful kitties: Mr. Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Pouncival (both names from the musical), Mr. Merlin (my gorgeous jet black boy with bright green eyes, he's my man! Don't tell hubby!) and the newbie Lil' Miss Oreo. I lost one recently to a fox in the area R.I.P. Miss Sketchers I miss you so much!

PS. I'll see what I can do for more pics!

I'm down to just one cat :-(

and will stay that way until I live somewhere else; we're really cramped here and before I brought in another cat I'd have to figure out how to make the yard escape proof. My current cat came with the place; she's always lived here, and she knows how to negotiate the environment.

32. Sorry to hear about Miss Sketchers
but are you sure it was a fox? They aren't much bigger than cats, and they aren't known to go after other preditors unless they're rabid or have other serious illnesses like distemper (unlike a coyote, which will kill cats, foxes, and small dogs). If you're sure it was a fox, please call fish and wildlife ASAP before you've got an epidemic on your hands!

40. We're pretty sure it was a fox.
They are known for cat killings in these parts and one was holed up behind our house at the school. He was relocated though. She wasn't a big cat at all, maybe 5 pounds tops. There was another kitty victim as well.

Here in Colorado, it can be a dangerous place for kittys.

Thanks for the compliment by the way.

oh they are SO BEAUTIFUL! I love all cats. I have 4. I looked at the first picture and it reminded me of a cat named "Big" I had many years ago...a large, sweet as pie, grey longhair.

I didn't know Maine coons could be orange also. OHHHH, they all look so laid back. Just like pussies should be. You must be a good kittymommy. Hug those babies for me. Oh and the last photo of the white and orange cat with the "horsie" cat in the basket sleeping together, too sweet, too sweet.

Holy Mary Mother Of God...is that really the size of these cats? I've never heard of this breed, nor seen photos.

I'm not a cat person, but if you're gonna have a cat these look like pretty cool cats. Hell, they could scare away a burglar!

Wow...learn something new everyday.

25. Yes, Maine Coons get huge...
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 11:02 PM by mkuhl
My Dad has four of them. If they were any smarter we'd all be in trouble.

And yes, there is some Photoshop here.

A few things to look for...

In the fourth picture down, look at the area where her hands meet the cat's fur. There is some blurring at exactly that point. This is done to mask the obvious imperfections created when you drop a layer onto another.

Now, look at the other pictures. Notice the areas where the blurring shows up. The bottom picture, where the two cats meet, for example.

Very clearly Photoshopped.

27. Um, I know these people, and I have one of
these cat's offspring. There's NO PHOTOSHOP HERE! Jesus, I HATE being called a liar! The reason the photos are blurred is because they are aliased from being downloaded into my crappy picturetrial account.

I swear to God, there's so much CT stuff going on here, that half the people on DU think EVERYTHING is a clever hoax!

36. Long, long ago
(around the 1750s) longhaired cats from France and Norway interbred with "local" cats in Maine...farm cats, plus bobcat and lynx (once thought to be a myth, but recent DNA tests prove it). They still maintain the heavy bone structure and "lynx tips" of those early breedings (plus large ears are preferred by breeders these days).
