My pet bird flew out the door and is lost....
anybody know what the success rate is of getting them back.

I put posters out all around my condo complex - at the grocery stores, gas stations and other stores. Also put an ad in the paper. Birds can fly hundereds of miles though so he could have gone anywhere.

1. Next time have someone teach you how to clip a wing.

6. I know how to clip them but I don't feel it is right to clip their wings.
They love to fly - that's what makes them birds. They also need to be able to fly to get proper exercise. I let them run and fly around free in my "bird room."

2. I'm sorry
What kind of bird is it? Something that might determine the success rate in return.

I'd station some food on the windowsill that he likes.

3. A teacher of mine, from 6th grade had a bird that flew away...
It came back a year later. Exact same bird (microchip ID). Flew in the window and sat down where the cage had been. Mrs. N. still has no idea what happened.

8. In case you haven't already,
leave the cage outside with the door open and food in the dish.

Good Luck. My daughter has a cockatiel, and we love him to pieces. I hope you get yours back. :(

9. There is a chance
When you go outside, make a sound that it associates with you. This kind of sound communication is how flocks of birds manage to assemble together. Listen for the bird to respond, and then try to figure out where the sound is coming from. I got one back this way.

Flyers and food and the open cage outside are all useful tactics too.

There is hope.
