"I see you have a cockatoma on your arm."
Here's a pic of my umbrella cockatoo, preparing to destroy my digital camera:

1. Umbrellas are fun.
They need LOTS of love and attention (even more so than most parrots), but they are wonderful birds.

4. That's where the term "cockatoma" comes from
He'd have himself surgically attached to me if he could!

5. Yep!
I have a Meyer's parrot and a Pacific parrotlet. They are WAY more independent than most cockatoos, but they're still demanding.

Owning a cockatoo is like having a 3-year-old child. For 50+ years. I don't know that I could handle a 'too, but I still love them to death. :)

6. That was the point, for me...
I love toddlers. I miss having toddlers. (My kids are 6 and 8, and I don't have them full-time.) So, voila! A bird with toddler-like qualities! :-)

10. This one?

He was only $850 with cage and accessories* because he has emotional problems. In a retail place they'll be about $1500, but the real cost comes in terms of time and emotional energy.

If you ever want a cockatoo, first go to http://www.mytoos.com and listen to the sound files at full volume, and read about the down-sides, like emotional problems, aggression, and the lifestyle changes that feathery toddlers require.

*I immediately had to drop more than $100 on toys, new food, and vet care.

Also, I am paying for him in $50 increments because his owner couldn't stand the screaming and cut me a break.

11. My Aunt had a bird
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 05:43 PM by Bushneedstogo
He would sing all of the time and whistle out "Wheel Of Fortune" and then he would make all of the binging noises of the vowels turning and the wheel spinning. He also made doorbell, telephone sounds and he would bark like a dog and laugh like my aunt which was kind of creepy after she died.

My Cousin took him over after my Aunt died and he can swear now .
