New iMac packs computer inside screen
Apple promotes latest flat-panel model as the 'world's thinnest' desktop

PARIS Apple Computer engineered another design coup on Tuesday, introducing an iMac here that incorporates all of the personal computer's innards into a flat-panel screen that balances on an aluminum stand.

1. That thing looks coooool.
And I'm a PC guy. Been wondering about an imac, but... too pricey, when I can put together a good gaming PC for about half the price of an imac.

7. Don't think so

The base iMac is $1300. You can't put together a serious gaming PC for less than $2K, and most gamers I know would scoff at what you could get for that (heck, I know folks who've paid that much for a video card). Granted that the iMac is *not* adequate as a gaming machine either, but people want iMacs (and other consumer Macs) for different reasons than they want a generic wintel box for $550 after four rebates. I contend that once you factor in ease of use, quality of customer support, quality of included software, and longevity of product, the iMac will cost you LESS than a $500 Dell, if you can see why your time and experience should be monetized in the comparison.

Been using all platforms for a decade, run a lab full of machines including unix and XP and NT and OSX server xServe G5s. *Always* prefer the Mac as a personal sidearm, and for most purposes as a high-end creative platform too (for video and audio work, which is what I mostly do, there's no competition from PCs, but then we're comparing $5000 machines, tricked-out Athlon 64s compared to tricked-out G5 2.5 DP Macs, and software is a crucial issue). For gaming, a PC is def. better because Mac games are too few in number.

I haven't looked at the new iMac closely yet, but if it maintains Apple's track record of value for money of recent years, it should be $1300 well spent.

(Posted, for overkill, on a G5 2.5 GHz DP/2 GB/4 x 250GB SATA/ Radeon 9600 liquid cooled cheese-grater running OSX Server 10.3)

3. And costs $1300 more than a thin client console, which is the
future of computing as nobody will be able to pirate and the big companies can introduce leasing that will make them secure in their wealth, this is not tinfoil...

I'm fighting myself over what to add first,t he bluettoth wireless moue and keyboard, or Airprot Extree card and Express abse station...and since i's going to b a while for the supply to be built up, I might s well plan ahead

I think I'll start witht he midrange model, 512 MB of RAM. It'll have a Superdrive. But WiFi or Bluettoth next?

11. not exactly new

they did this before with the 20th Anniversary Macintosh introduced back in March 1997

Original Price: $7500.00 US

It was actually on display at SFMOMA for it's unique design.

The subwoofer was a Bose system. Sounded really good.
only a 12" display and 250 mhz 603e

13. hmm
this model appears to have a separate CPU. Apple has totally eliminated that.

Also, I recommend installing your own RAM. It's super easy and a lot cheaper.

14. not a separate CPU
It's the sub woofer for the built in sound system. It also served as the power supply, so that part was eliminated in the new iMac design.

15. Simply incredible
Wow...Apple just keeps on dazzling me with its innovative designs and software. This new G5 is simply amazing. Microsoft and Windows have nothing on Steve Jobs. I've always liked PCs but I like to say that I am officially now a Mac convert.

P.S. John Kerry uses a 15-inch Powerbook! AWESOME
