Funeral services for my nephew

MATTOON--- Neeley, Charles L., Jr.

Funeral services for Spc. Charles L. Neeley, Jr., 19, will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 3rd at the Mattoon High School gymnasium, with Msgr. Jeff Grant and Father Peter Hsu officiating. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation for Spc. Neeley will be at Schilling Bros. Funeral Home in Mattoon from 2-8 p.m., Thursday, with a Biblical wake service at 7:00.

Spc. Neeley died August 26th in Tikrit, Iraq, while on duty with the United States Army. He is survived by his parents, Charles L. "Chuck" Neeley, Sr., and Rosario M. "Rosie" (Osiguera) Neeley, both of Mattoon, and 2 sisters, Linda and Patricia, also of Mattoon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Charles' memory be made to the Eastern Illinois Food Bank, the American Red Cross or moveon.org .

Words fail me. Your expressions of love and support mean more to me than I can find words to describe, and I will never forget them. In trying to make sense out of something that is fundamentally nosensical, I have read and re-read the many messages both here and in my inbox, and they have given me the strength to face what must be faced, and to do what must be done. My family, Paddy and I thank you.

If there is any purpose served by Carlito's death, it is perhaps the one my baby brother said monday evening: maybe--- just maybe--- Carlito's death will personalize the awful consequences of this war for those to whom it has so far been only video footage on the nightly news, and help them to understand the fundamental wrongness of this war and of its continuation. I hope and pray that he is right.

May the loving God in whose care my Carlito now rests bless and keep you all, now and forever more.
