1. all I can think of the Danielle Dax version of
Tomorrow Never Knows. But then I don't get all the trance/techno/whatever distinctions. I'm more of a world beat/rock/jazz maven. Anyway it is a good tune.

or Osibisa. Great music from Africa.

17. yes
my husband has some. I used to listen to all that 70s- style Afro-pop as well. And I love Youssou N'Dour. Saw him once, great show. And I also saw Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens. Fabulous.

How are ya? I had fun showing my sister you guys pix from the march. She went to NYU and lived in NYC for two years.

20. I'm great, love!
Things are really jazzed up since the march. I have real optimism about the election. Just being around every color, gender and orientation in the company of my closest friends, fam, and my friends fam - with DU messages and messages from my parents and my fiancée's parents on my shirt - it was indescribable!

How are you and your fam?

21. that is so nice
we are good. My son started school today - he is in 3rd grade now, which is hard to believe. I had a nice day to myself and some time to goof off, blast a bunch of music and try to get the house in some semblance of order. My husb' mother was pretty ill, but is getting out of the hosp. with a better prognosis. So things are going pretty well.

The recent marches with their wonderful energy and diversity are indeed very inspiring. :grouphug:

23. Well - please accept my good thoughts and vibes for your mom-in-law
We are fighting this fight for the great love which unites and binds us (if I may sound both preachy and cheezy at once!)

What I mean is: we are all in this great struggle together - thanks be to - (enter higher powew or none or other here) - for that!

26. Chavez you are a good soul!
and a sweetie, too. On with the schmoozefest! I am so fortunate that this past year I have met so many nice younger and older people who are so postive and excited about politics. I have missed that the last few years while I was focused on being a mom to a little one. Music is also more on my radar again, and that makes me feel like I have reconnected with the person I was before I became a parent.

I just sent Moveon some dough. So I am feeling positive and will not let the Rep. negativity dampen my resolve.

16. Actually, trance IS considered techno
As techno usually refers to anything that is an offshoot of the original Detroit-born sound. :-)

19. Feh...I'll do my best,
but it'd be infinitely easier if you were here and I could play it for ya...:D (Me = not so much the writer...)

Ok, in the absolute broadest possible terms (which I'm sure will still be disagreed with...oh well)...

Trance is fast, loads of keyboards (as opposed to sampling), often uses handclaps... the *arena rock* of electronic music. As previously mentioned, it is an offshoot of House, which was Chicago's take on what Detroit was doing back in *tha* day. Also like House, Trance often employs big soaring diva-esque vocals. One of the easiest to spot earmarks of Trance is the big build up/break down thing. It's pop techno.

D&B and Jungle (WARNING - OPINION) are kinda bastardizations of each other. *Jungle* has kind of ceased to be for all practical purposes except for the hardcore faithful to the original sound. Lots of erratic beats, very raw and unstructured. D & B is Jungle's kinder, gentler sibling; whereas Jungle is very abrasive and scattered, D&B tends to have smoother production and is VERY SLIGHTLY more melodic. Which ain't sayin' much.

Hope this helps. This is how I see it, anyway...it's highly possible someone else would tell you something entirely different and that I was talking, ala Dookus, out of my ass. :hi:

22. thanks
I always learn a lot about music on this site. I know a fair amount about many forms of music, but that is an area where I really have little knowledge. My sweetie listens to more in that area than I do.
