What's a "girlie man"?
Is it a straight or a gay reference?

Is it an insult to men or women?

3. we went through this discussion here in cali when AS used
the term to refer to lawmakers who wouldn't approve parts of his budget plan. It refers to a sat night live skit (pump you up!). There was much debate as to who this term actually offends and how.

4. It means wimp, but some people consider it anti-gay
It basically means "a guy with the strength of a little girl".

10. He is allowed because that is the level of communication
that is needed to sway the level of mentality of much of America.

13. It IS meant to be an insult to men
I have other insults I prefer to hurl, but it's supposed to be degrading (it's the same as calling a guy a p**sy). Personally, I don't have a problem with the term as an insult, but I do have a problem with the fact that Republican politicians have resorted to the tactics of 12 year old schoolyard bullies in order to get their ways. Whatever happened to American politics being the great example of deliberative governance? :eyes:

21. Yes, but we're free to reply!
The term indicates that women are inferior & weak. And that some men are as weak as women, so they are also inferior. And it's not just their masculine strength, but their heterosexuality that's in question. Because, of course, gays are inferior as well.

And here's Robert Mapplethorpe's portrait of Arnold.

8. Excuse me but I'm p*ssed about this word "girlie-man"...
does Arnold assume women don't think about economics?? I tend to have a pessimistic view of the economy and rightfully so. I am not a girlie-man for thinking so!!!! He lives in his own little macho world I guess--the world he shares with Republicans.

16. You can blame AL Franken for that one.
That saying was from the "Hans und Franz" skit from SNL. The skit was based around two AH-Nuhld worshippers which coined the phrase, and it stuck big time, and in a round about way, it got adopted by Arnie himself...

Ve are going to PUUUMP <clap> YOU UP!!

17. It's an insult to Dem Men and ALL WOMEN
It's insulting to all females to imply that men who are liberals are girly men. Some of our best economists are female.

19. It is from a Saturday Night Live Skit where they were
making fum of Arnold and his testosterone soaked ethic.

In its original form it was intended as a light-herated jab at "muscle-heads" like Arnold. He has coopted the phrase to use against people he defines as a wimp.

Personally, it does not ofend me at all and I probaly fit his definition of a girlie-man. It only shows how the Republicans have nothing but soundbites and insult, no real policy.

I just hope the American people see Arnold for the contentless prig he is.
