7. Yes. You probably have some fluid in your inner ear.
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:55 PM by Mary Pat
It could presage an ear infection. Lie with that ear up, tonight, so that it can drain. You can also place something warm on the outside of that ear, for a little while, such as a heating pad, a hot water bottle, or a baked potato--seriously, just wrap it up so that it can't burn your skin.

PS If you have to blow your nose, blow with both nostril open, at once. Closing off one nostril can cause major backups in the whole sinus/ear/post-nasal drainage system.

8. If it continues you should see an EN&T specialist
You say it comes and goes. Is that over the past weeks or months? Fluid in your ear could be a fluid leakage of the inner ear due to Menieres Syndrome. I've been there and done that since the early 90's. PM me if it continues to be a problem and want more info.

9. Do you know how to do a valsalva manuever?
When you are scuba diving and get that feeling in your ears you close your nose with your fingers and keep your mouth shut and blow.
This should relieve the feeling. If that doesn't help the other cause is that your eustacian tube is blocked...this is the tube that runs from your ears. I use psuedafed a lot because this happens to me quite frequently.
Good luck.

12. If that doesn't work, try the same thing (blow SOFTLY) and swallow
at the same time. If it's just a strange pressure issue, that may clear it.

My issue was a diving-related middle-ear barotrauma. The treatment was Flonase and Sudafed. It cleared up in a few days.

:D heh sorry, I know you guys are likely to win, if it makes you feel better, if it were the Slovaks VS the US, I'd still root for my Slovak brothers. Weird feeling in your ear btw, I got terrible ear wax myself.

I'VE GOT TEARS IN MY EARS
(Harold Barlow)

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
And the tears in my ears, they're off the
beaten track
Since you said "It's goodbye, we are through"
So if I should get water on the brain
You will know you're the one who is to blame
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin'on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
I've been cryin' these tears and soakin' in my
sack
Since the day I found you were untrue
And if I don't get up pretty soon
I'll turn into a sleepy lagoon
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
It's been so many years, my sacroiliac
Feels as though it's been soaked through and
through
Oh, you lied when you said we'd take the plunge
Now I know how it feels to be a sponge
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

Voices are distorted in the affected ear, so they sound like robot-voices (think the beginning of the Beastie Boys "Intergalactic"). And there's the feeling like if I could just shake the water out of the ear, or yawn and "pop" it, there'd be no more robot voices. But it won't pop, and there's no water in it.

Last time this happened I went to the ENT, who thought I had a brain tumor and ordered a head MRI. Nothing. Went away after a few days. Came back yesterday, as a matter of fact. I've been sick this week with sinusish kind of stuff, so I'm attributing this latest spell to eustacian tube drainage problems. Or possibly imminent robot invasion of Earth. Either way, I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about.

14. YES! I just got back from the doc for treatment of an outer ear infection
Do you have any itching in the affected ear? Have you been swimming at all? (That's not always the cause of this, BTW.) Do you have any pressure in the ear, or does it feel stuffy in any way?

For some reason, in the summer months, our ears are more susceptable to infection.

Mine started with an itching sensation aftr working out strenuously on Saturday, and I also had that feeling of water in the ear. I put it off until Monday, when I woke up with major pain in the outer ear. When it began to swell up today, I got myself to the doc, who prescribed some antibiotic drops and Cipro.

Usually, some OTC psudafed will dry things up nicely. But keep tabs on this and don't let it turn into an infection.
