Wanted: New College Football to root for - tell me why I should choose...
your team?

I grew up about 45 minutes from Penn State University and I've always cheered on the Nittney Lions and Joe Paterno, even now that I live in Delaware.

But Joe Paterno is a diehard republican and supporter of the chimp in the White House, but even I've let that slide. Now, his son, Scott Paterno, a useless lout who wouldn't have a College or law degree if it wasn't for the fact that Daddy is the football coach (he graduated from Penn State and Dickenson Law School, which is part of the Penn State School system). and has never held a job where he's made more than $10k a year, is now running for US Representative in PA17. (That's my parent's home district). Scott didn't even live in the 17 until repukes were desperate to find someone to run against popular Tim Holden(D) and figured people in Central PA are stupid enough to vote for someone simply because his dad is a legendary football coach for Penn State. Plus Scott has 'Found Jebus' and says Newt Gingrich is his hero. I don't think he has a chance, even my republican parents are voting for Holden because Holden was there for the Steelworkers who lost their pensions 2 years ago.

SO.....

I need a new College Football team to cheer on. Now I do root for my UDel Blue Rocks, but they are Division Ia, which means they're not quite the big leagues. So I'm looking for a Division I team that is worthy of the support of this die-hard sports fan.

Recommend a team I should cheer on and why I should!!!

2. Have I got a team for you......................
The West Virginia Mountaineers.

Why? Because after fighting our way into the top 25 over the past few years, by virtue of some stunning upsets over the likes of perennial powerhouse Virginia Tech. Finally WVU gets the respect it deserves with an pre-season Coach's poll ranking of #11.

Sure, some will say our season is an easy one. And there are some arguments supporting that line of thinking. However, the fact that WVU stayed true to the Big East and didn't jump ship like so may others in that conference, gives you another reason to root for the 'ol Gold and Blue.

Come join us at lovely Mountaineer Field.

Have I sold ya?

12. Cheering for temple is like cheering for UDel
And Temple Basketball usually pisses me off every year because I have them going futher in the tournaments than what they are ever capable of doing. But I usually always support the Philly teams!

4. I've got one for you!
University of Missouri Tigers. Liberal town, liberal team, liberal island in a sea of red. And the team is on the rise. We kicked Nebraska's ass last year, went to a bowl, are picked for a Big XII North title, with a chance of winning it all. And our quarterback is under consideration for the Heisman. What more could you want? M-I-Z Z-O-U!

Tradition...championships...TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land).

The greatest rivalry in all of American sports, pro or college.

There is NOTHING like Ohio Stadium on a fall afternoon in central Ohio.

Nothing.

31. I separate politics and football...
My dad and I have had a lot of problems with my political...evolution, if you will. It has strained our relationship at times, and it saddens me, because I love him a lot and we have always been close.

Football has been our escape valve. When things get tense for one of us and the subject needs to be changed, one of us starts talking football. We may disagree, but it's a jovial, dad to son disagreement where we can kid each other and feelings don't get hurt, and mean, hurtful things aren't said.

I pay no attention to the political persuasions of football players and coaches, and neither does my dad. It's sacrosanct for us.

And it's saved our relationship.

Though WSU may not perform like last year, with Paus as QB for UW a good matchup may happen. Follow WSU and make sure to watch the Apple Cup.

18. Well, nobody's liberal in nebraska, but the Cornhuskers are
going to try throwing the ball this year. They've never done that before, and it should be interesting to watch. And the new coach is a west coast guy - don't know his politics at all. Also, # 1 Lornell McPherson played q-back in high school to my son's wingback/ free safety. Real nice kid. I think the huskers have him playing d-back, maybe corner.

22. Pick the NDSU Bison!!!
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 06:53 PM by northwest
Because:

1) We're gaining a lot of exposure from our move to DI-AA

2) We kicked Valparaiso's ass 52-0 last week

3) We had a LONG, storied tradition in DII before we moved to DI (8 national football championships in DII or College Level)

4) We play in the best dome in college football, the Fargodome, capacity 19,287.

23. Pull for Duke
Even though the administration is Repug, the football coach is Repug, the players are Repugs, even Wallace Wade Stadium is probably named for a Repug, pull for Duke.

When Duke takes the field, you know what the result's going to be: they will get stomped. So you can concentrate on more important things than football, like eating fried chicken and drinking beer.

If FOOTBALL is more important than BEER, Washington State University and the University of Washington are both real good choices.

24. Having Politicial tiffs
with your favorite football team is hard. What is the ESPN ads say? (Not the brilliant "This is SportsCenter" campaign...) Sports is supposed to be a common unifier, and loyalty to a team is something that trumps politics, because while debates about politics is grounded in facts, debate between two fans of rival sports clubs is based in emotion, mostly. (Even though factual debate about sports is now popular thanks to PTI and its ilk)

Now you have tiffs with the Paterno family. Is this any reason to quit loving the lions? Perhaps. Anyway, the passion is gone. You may try to repeat the same things with any other team. Perhaps you would be better off rooting for no one in particular.

You can have a unique perpective by just watching the D-I football season as a fan of the sport. Reserve your hometown passion for UDel.

28. I never minded that Joe Paterno was a repuke....
....it's this lugnut that is turning me off and the fact that his Daddy should have intervened and told him not to make an ass of himself and run.

He ran against to other republicans in the primaries and barely won with like 35% of the vote (my parents voted for a different republican which honestly that guy came off as a pretty decent guy and would have served the district well). Fortunately my parents are damn smart and know that Tim Holden has done well for the district and Scott Paterno is nothing but a lazy ass slacker who would be managing a local Jiffy Lube if he daddy was Joe Paterno.

So honestly, it's not Joe who has turned me away but his son that pushed me over the edge. Plus I never went to Penn State so what loyalty do I owe to that college
