I hate to say it, but I may have to go back to school
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 04:40 PM by HEyHEY
Okay, I went and reviewed my finanical situation today, all $20 of it. See, the friggin student loan peolple got their payment out early for some reason. And even though I got paid Tuesday, I'm broke today after rent and such. I spent $30 at the pub watching hockey....and was expecting I could spare a whopping $30 from my cheque.
But no, I haven't even bought groceries and I have two weeks until next paycheque. This engine thing is gonna kill me. So, I'll have to tack $50 to that car repair loan so I can eat.
Anyway, I was reviewing my options today. Chances of a communications gig are slim, chances of a reporting job in Vancouver (so I could live at home for a couple months and save) are slim. And I haven't heard a thing about this radio gig.
I think I may just see if I can go back to gardening with the city for way more money and go back to school. As much as I dig this job, I can't live like this.
I have no idea what I would take though, and I'm not really wanting to go to school more. But I have no idea what I would take - certainly no more journalism as I know people with more education than me working for less money in the same crappy towns.
This really sucks.

1. Go back to school, man.
Shit, if I could be gardening for Vancouver and go to school I'd pack up and leave what I'm doing now (which is just getting paid to go to school).

Journalism jobs got to be much better in Vancouver than in Buttfuck, Alberta.

4. What about with an advanced degree?
What are you considering? Grad school? Another bachelor's? Technical degree?

6. I have no idea
I really want to be a journalist, or at least in an are where I can still be one. I've always said my second desire would be something on the water, maybe something in the marine field

8. No, I'm not really a gear head
My friend does that though. I've thought of taking a first mate's course, which would get me started on large charter yachts and stuff.... it was one of those things I looked into a long time ago, but I have no idea what the pay and job is like. Maybe I should look into it.

9. Well, you could be a fisherman...
Aside from the 100% injury rate, it pays pretty well. Oh, but you wouldn't see friends or family, and it gets pretty lonely with all that ice and wind, but the pay is great. Who am I kidding, you should go back to school!

11. YAR!
Truthfully, I'd love to be a beachcomer. Just motor around picking up logs all day and selling them back to the lumber yards.

5. Only go back to school if you will really utilize the education
Otherwise it's just a loan for living expenses and lost time. I'm currently in school for my second career (at 33 no less) and I'm loving it.

Good luck!

10. Andy Card says we'll ALL need to go back to school....
Says we "can't compete with only 20th-century skills"...

Same CRAP the GOP sold us in 1982.....

Don't know what to tell you, HEy, other than to ask if you've cast your net farther (beyond Vancouver)...

13. it sounds like you are really good at what you do and work hard
Why does it pay so little? Are you a stringer? Have you ever done that? Sorry if this has already been explained. Maybe you should start a blog, hey hey, you seem to have really good writing skills.

15. I'm an editor
It pays little because there is a line of people behind me that will do the job for that pay. Everyone wants to do this job you know. So, the pay is shit.

I make about $2100 gross a month, that is a $400 raise compared to my last job as just a reporter. When all the bills are paid I have about 250-300 a month with which to by food and fuel for my car, which I use for work ($60 of that 2100 is supposed to be my "auto allowance" yeah right as if it helps)
Also, most of that 250-300 comes on the second paycheque of the month, so I basically have to make 250-300 last for a month. That's before I factor in what this new bill to fix my car will cost me.

Fuck this crap. It just isn't worth it.

16. ah
It is a shame that such interesting work is so poorly compensated due to competition and other factors. I understand this since I have worked in community mental health for most of my career. And things are so much more expensive than when I got my BA. Well, I wish you well! Can't think of a less sappy platitude. We have a friend who attended Columbia Journalism School and even he has had a difficult time finding his path. ( he wrote for a right-leaning paper here for a while.) Good luck.
