"Silver City"--new film by John Sayles
It's the story of the inarticulate, not-so-bright offspring of a prominent Colorado family who runs for Governor of Colorado--backed by big money. Scheduled to open September 17th, it stars Chris Cooper as the politician & a large, interesting cast. It was discussed on BBCAMERICA's "Talking Movies", with Sayles calling himself a "partisan"--& linking that word to those who fought against Hitler. (The film was previously discussed on Bill Moyers' show, which I missed--I'm so ashamed!)

Sounds interesting. www.dickiepilager.com/

1. I thought it was about a presidential candidate
I guess i was wrong. I wonder if this will hurt Pete Coors as well as Bush. That's 2 politically influenced movies with a Colorado connection before Election day. This movie, and "Team America: World Police" from the South Park boys. Unfortunatly the latter will probably attempt to get at our side siginfigantly more than any anti-republican stuff.

2. Love the Web site!!!
Very well done, and Chris Cooper is one of my favorite actors. I can't wait to see this one...

On Freedom
The world changed as we knew it on September 11th, 2001. Much like December 7th, 1941, the United States of America was slapped, and now we must all do our duty -- however small, however large – and slap back.

Enemies of our country will try to impede the freedoms which made our great state great. Freedom built our gold mines. Freedom killed the Indians who lived here. Freedom raped our natural resources. Freedom transformed this wild frontier into our home, and I will not idly sit while godless, valueless cowards attempt to hijack our free democratic institutions. With the help of our military forces around the world and within our country, we will preserve our freedoms and keep Colorado safe. A vote for Dickie Pilager is a vote against the terrorists. Don’t let them win! Not in Colorado!

On Taxes
While the federal government has done its best to reduce the tax burden, many states have increased state taxes and used those funds to bolster such wasteful programs as government subsidized housing and food stamps.

As governor, I will follow my daddy’s policy of passing the savings on to you, the constituents, and not wasting them on the poor, who clearly don’t know how to use money, if they don’t have any, right? People will have more money to be free to do what they want, and to buy what they want. The people know best how to spend their money not the bean counters. When that money is spent, the government gets taxes. By keeping money in our people’s pockets, we create a win-win situation. And Colorado is a winner!

3. John Sayles is a long time fave of mine.
This is his film, and he wrote/directed two others that should be faves of all of DU, "Lone Star" and "Eight Men Out." Neither is a political movie per se, but JS demonstrates his left bent thruout his work.

I'm really looking forward to this new one, after seeing the preview during F9/11.

4. Sayles Is a Nat'l Treasure
Matewan was the first political film that ever truly rocked my little world.

I admire how he whores himself out to Hollywood as a script doctor and then turns around and uses the money to make gems.

5. He is a gifted filmmaker and a thought-provoker
The exploration of borders in Lone Star was amazing; that he was able to explore in one film racial, class, gender, and political borders in a coherent and engaging narrative is something to be admired.

6. One of the best last lines of a movie ever:
"Forget the Alamo..."

I have a conflicted neo-Fundy friend (adores Michael Moore but voted for * in Florida last time) who didn't get Lone Star at all, stating only "I knew who really killed Kristofferson all along." Not. the. point. fucko!

Forgot to mention Matewan before. A revelation.

Only "City of" dreams? Light? Don't remember the title, but didn't work for me. Haven't seen Sunshine State yet, or the Casa Del Baby (lol) movie yet.

And don't get me started about Cusack as Buck Weaver in 8 Men Out.

Shoeless Joe, staring at the candlelight with one eye. "Whaddayou do when you go blind, Joe?"

"Stare with the other eye."
