Guys: need good vibes. My mom's stuck in Stuart, Fl right now.....
And Frances is supposed to make landfall IN HER COUNTY. I just got off the phone with her; she can't leave because the highways are blocked up, and she's taken all precaustions about boarding up her little apartment (she basically lives in a trailer park).

I begged her to get out, but she wouldn't. She says he's got a spare mattress and is going to lie down under it in case anything falls down on her. I'm kinda freaking out here.

I don't believe in God, but if I did, I'd be praying that Frances avoids my mom as much as possible. Any DU good vibes you could send her way'd be appreciated and be paid back tenfold in karmic dollars.

Thanks, y'all.

1. sorry to hear she won't go to a shelter......I'll pray for God's will to
be done....

unfortunately you are powerless on making her do what is best for her.

So take care of yourself by doing something good for you.

4. She says the shelters are full.
She tried getting into one, and it was "all booked up." Sigh.

This hurricane is going to be HUGE, too; can't they just convert local govt./office buildings into shelters for the people who can't get into a normal one?

11. if she shows up and just camps out,,....they have to let her in....
there are hallways, there are spaces......go to the police station...go to the hospital...go to any public help place.....they will take her in...she still has time....

I would go to the whichever of these is closest to her home - police station or hospital - they HAVE to help

15. If she were to leave now, she'd get stuck on the road.
She's a bit out of the way, and her car's not all that...drivable. And the nearest shelter's not very near. And since she already tried, she won't go back to the shelter out of pride.

Believe me, I've been begging her since tuesday to get out and go to Georgia and she's determined to stay if she can't get a decent (ie.e a BED) accomodation in a shelter.

21. a trailer is a death trap.....
maybe stating to her -
Mom, do you want to die???? is this your choice right now???

I did this with my mother when she was drinking herself to death

Depending on her answer - you either accept or you push to go to the police station or hospital whichever is closest....

there has to be a building somewhere between her and traffic jams that is public and safer than where she is.....

stubborn people are very difficult to deal with.....they sometimes have made up their minds for reasons we can not phathom....

22. She says her house is sturdy.
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 07:57 PM by RandomKoolzip
Concrete, steel in the walls, etc. It's not a trailer per se; her tiny little house is on a dead end street with lots of other tiny little houses, all the size of trailers. Apparently, that's the wacky zoning you get in Eff El Lay. I don't buy the whole "sturdy" thing. But I'm helpless here, she's not leaving.

I dunno.

I wish I wasn't in Chicago right now and could go and get her.

5. Keeping you and your mom in my prayers...
I know Stuart well. I used to visit the House of Refuge museum regularly when I was a kid. The beach is so beautiful there.

I hope all remain safe...

8. Stuart's cool!
Florida is really the epicenter of non-cool in America, but Stuart is like an oasis of coolness; they got the Velvet Underground Appreciation Society there, 50 Skadillion Watts records, Groovy Movies A-Go Go, Confusion Records, and lots of good people and indie bands. Plus their branch library was the only one in Florida where I could get a copy of Maury Terry's "The Ultimate Evil," a forgotten-but-interesting book on the Son of Sam murders. I was glad my mom moved there instead of say...Pensacola (ewwwwwww!)

And the beaches are BEAUTIFUL, especially on Hutchinson Island (prime Manatee-spotting territory!)

7. Sorry is in such a situtation, so is my daughter....
My daughter lives in the outskirts of Orlando. He's done all she can to secure her home and is staying at home. I also asked her to go to a shelter or drive up north. She's in her first house and new house, she would rather go down with the ship, if anything bad happens. I told her to keep her insurance policy secured in a plastic bag and to make a list of all her belongins...she did better. She photograph all her belongs and her house in and out. God Bless your Mom and my darling sweet daughter.

10. I send a paper airplane full of gracious thoughts your way....
Good for your daughter to keep her insurance tight! I hope she stays safe, too.....

Driving up North looks like it'd be the WORST thing to do right now; i-95 is all backed up for hundreds of miles all the way into Georgia, and now Frances is veering Northward so all those people stuck on the highway are in for a nightmare. It'd be better to head over to Tampa or Miami right now.....

Anyhow, I hope they're ALL safe!

13. Uh...you don't know the HALF of it.
"Stubborn" is not a strong enough word. I love my mother, but when she's stuck on an idea, she's like a dog with an old sock. Tuesday night I BEGGED her to go to Georgia, but she said "she's not up for the drive." Obviously the alternative (lying supine under a mattress as her walls cave in and the house floods) was more attractive to her.

Yes, I'm quite worried! (biting nails)

The "Dog with an old sock" reference really struck me. Sounds like she's just like my mom was. If so, I wish you MUCH patience in dealing with her. Once she's determined, she's not changing her mind for anything or anyone. Good luck!

12. Well, the storm has weakened
and is moving really slow now, 4mph, and it usually weakens even more during the night, so hopefully it won't be as devastating as originally predicted. In addition, it's very uncommon for storms of this magnitude to maintain their size and ferocity this long, so perhaps that's why it's slowing down and decreasing in size. I'm watching very closely myself since I'm right in the path.

Yes, the winds are down to 95 mph and it seems to be stalling. Just heard that 10 minutes ago. Keep your fingers crossed. In fact, the local station says it might be a tropical storm with winds of only 65mph when it hits here. Could change though, but you never know.

Well, even a tropical storm would suck royally, but at least it's not "THE MOTHER OF ALL STORMS" like we'd been hearing the last few days.

Any silver lining here is appreciated. Thank you!

Funny, I had a guy practically threaten to beat me up over a parking space today; I asked him if he wanted to get out of the car and fight me over it! :D You should have seen the look on his face (he, to complete your mental pic, had a Bush/Cheney sticker on his car - LOL).

People need to take a serious sip of the lighten-the-fuck-up juice now and again. Good luck to you and yours!:hi:
