Around here, that's not a big deal. I live on the Southwest coast of Florida, so it looks like we've dodged another bullet with Frances, unlike our neighbors in Punta Gorda just 60 miles up the road. We're probably gonna get a couple days of rain and tropical storm force winds, which can go up to 73 mph. My guess is we'll probably only see 40 to 50 mph winds and maybe 8 to 10 inches of rain.
For those of you living in the North, or non-hurricane zones, you could equate the days before the storm and after with "Snow" days. Once you're prepared, you "hunker down" and that gives you a lot of extra time to read. In fact, it's one of the few times families actually get together.
My mother on the otherhand, lives in the target zone near Melobourne on the east coast. Of course, we asked her to come south, but she wanted to stay close to home. She's already safely tucked into a hurricane shelter with her husand.
She celebrated her 75th birthday yesterday at the shelter. She jokingly told me that it's better than last year when she was undergoing bypass surgery on her birthday. If I know my mother, she's already become head organizer of the sheleter and is busy telling stories of Hurricane Donna and others to the newcomers.
Fortunately, the storm seems to have weakened, and only has 115 mph winds, so that's good, but it can easily strengthen over the Gulfstream waters. Hopefully, the worst of this will be considerable flooding. Having lived in Florida my whole life, I have to say that people have prepared better for this storm than any I can remember.
Please send your prayers or good thoughts to those in this storm's path, and those who are still reeling from the effects of Charley. I can hear the rain pickig up now, so I'll be going to take a look outside now.
