So I broke down and finally bought "The DaVinci Code"
Mind you, I just bought 5 books yesterday (all polical books) AND I found a book about cat care on the discount rack of Waldenbooks. But I've decided that waiting for paperback of DVC wasn't about to happen for awhile since this book has been #1 on the fiction book for like the past 3 decades or something.

Anyhow, Barnes & Noble had the book on sale for 30% off so we'll see!

2. Its a good, fast read...not great literature but on a level with
John Grisham. I liked it, my partner (who doesn't read much fiction) loves it. If you want more info on the subject in general, check out Holy Blood, Holy Grail http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0440136482/002-1208449-4254457?v=glance

Most of all, sit back and enjoy the ride...

5. LS, you really need to try out your local library.
Please don't take this as criticism but it will save you a lot of bucks. My book buying days ended with the end of my last good job. The library has been a savior as far as keeping up my appetite for reading. True, you can't get the absolute latest must read but wait until the books come to you. Fortunately, my library has an online waitlist queue which helps out with bestsellers.

10. What do you mean by that?
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 11:41 PM by LiberalVoice
I bought one of his other books, "Digital Fortress" and I hated it. The main character was a woman who worked for the NSA trying to protect a super computer they made used to read/tap every email and phone call in the world.

How can I like a book who's heroin I despise?

16. davinci code was a bush rallying point
he referred to it this summer in order to touch base with the religious right. THe book deals with bibilical history type stuff.

22. Exactly
It proposes that Jesus was really just a great guy, not divine or the actual son of God at all. It's not the kind of book that will soon be coming to a Christian bookstore near you.

28. Saying that the "code was a bush rallying point"
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 08:57 AM by khephra
he referred to it this summer in order to touch base with the religious right."

Is not supported by your other statement: "But Bush did say he had read it....."

He's also read "My Pet Goat". Does that book rally the RW? Just because he's read something doesn't make it a RW book. I didn't like the book, but it is most definitely NOT a book that would rally the RW.

(I can't believe I'm defending a book that I thought was poorly written.)

The Code deals with suppressed Biblical history. Most RWers and the Catholic Church (which is now bending to the Right) consider Gnostic Christianty and any reinterpretation of Mary and Jesus to be heresy. Falwell and Robertson have come out totally against the book.

If Bush has mentioned that he's read it (which, I think, it actually might have been Laura that mentioned it), it's not to touch base with the Religious Right. If he did read it and mention it to the Religious Right, then you can bet that he condemned the book as being anti-Christian. It's hard to explain exactly why without spoiling the book for those who haven't read it or don't know the plot, but those here who have read it will back me up on this.

Here's some articles from the Religious Right on the Code:

By Laurie Goodstein

Fearing that the best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" may be sowing doubt about basic Christian beliefs, a host of Christian churches, clergy members and Bible scholars are rushing to rebut it.

In 13 months, readers have bought more than six million copies of the book, a historical thriller that claims Christianity was founded on a cover-up — that the church has conspired for centuries to hide evidence that Jesus was a mere mortal, married Mary Magdalene and had children whose descendants live in France.

21. Really? I'd like to read about that. Got any links?
Falwell, Robertson and the rest of the RW preachers think the book was written by the devil (metaphorically). I'd find it really interesting if Bush is using it.

Just because a book deals with Biblical history it doesn't mean it's going to appeal to RWers. It deals with Gnostic Christianity, which is a heresy in their eyes.

18. If it's a Republican book
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 12:46 AM by khephra
Then why are all the right wing Christians writing attack books against it and making anti-TDVC videos?

I'm not a fan of Dan's writing. It's too simple for me. I've read similar tales many times over. If I'm going to read fictional books on conspiracies then give me Foucault's Pendulum, The Illuminatus Trilogy, The Crying of Lot 49, and Preacher any day over TDVC anyday.

I must admit I enjoyed it. Mind you, it's poorly written but the subject matter make up for the extremely annoying writing flaws. I hated the way each chapter ended in some kind of fake cliffhanger. And the book kind of petered out at the end. But, it had great ideas presented in an easily accessible format.
