I'm considering purchasing a new drumkit.

Can I get something decent for around the $500 (or so) dollar range? Can anyone give me any good brand/model recommendations for, say, Jazz style drumming? Anyone know any good online resources to check out for, if nothing else, pricing purposes? Would I be better off buying a complete kit, or piecing something together? Any other advice you could give?

1. Find yourself a used set...

Of drums. Seek out the possibility of an old set of Slingerland Radio Kings. Excellent for jazz.

I know the guy that builds these kits. My son bought one of the first kits and he loves them. Derek supplies all the major musical events around here including the Jazz festivals and has sold a lot of these kits. Check him out. He is also a very cool guy and will work with you to get exactly what you want.
