And I just realized, Ted Koppel challenged Stewart to a duel, -the day before Zell did it-.

2. well, I thought the whole thing was a little strange

Because a week before the duel comments on TV, my neighbor came over and told me her husband would be engaging in duel on the private road that separates our two houses.

It turns out she and her husband had a disagreement with a construction contractor and the contractor said he was coming over to duke it out on Saturday morning. My neighbor wanted me to be outside, trimming the hedges or something so I could be a witness if things got out of hand.

"Duke it out" became the more refined "duel" when my neighbor told me the story.

I also recall that when she said it, I was a bit confused. "Duel" is not an expression much heard anymore. As a person interested in language I notice these things.

So yes, this is a bit odd.
