I'd ultimately say "D" though I'd be tempted to answer "E". Carver seemed more of a real realist, man of honor, and humanist (that article linked above clinched it for me), though in ways both men are highly respectable. (okay, our first president used human beings as slaves, but nobody's perfect?)
