what's up(or down) with the price of gas in your area?
I had to fill up today, in a suburb of chicago(look at my screen name and guess which one...) and i had a little bit of sticker shock at the pump-
$1.71/gal for reg unleaded
$1.81/gal for the midgrade
$1.91/gal for premium

I thought that oil was still going for the big bucks...what gives?

at that price, i treated our Beetle to a tankful o' the good stuff.

1. I don't know about where you live, but
where I live those are some seriously high prices. That's about what we're paying here is southwest Ohio.

not even regular unleaded.
then yesterday, i went to the gas station- they don't even have a sign with the prices, but when i got to the pump, everything is under $2.00/gal., even premium...
it just seems a bit odd to me, considering that the price of crude hasn't been dropping.

Anywhere from 1.51/gal for regular to 1.79. Wide range across the metro, but of course the metro extends 30 miles in any direction.

I filled up at 1.55 the other day.

The "funny" part is that gas prices hit a steady level around 1.69/gal in at the cheaper places about two months ago and no matter how close to $50/barrel oil got, the price of gas didn't change at all. It had actually been higher than that when the cost of oil was lower. When oil started dropping from the near $50 mark, the price fell a bit at the cheaper places while the others stayed pretty much the same. There was a general, across the board average decrease of 5 cents per gallon last week.

5. I bought regular gas in Houston for $1.63 the last time.
Could there be some pressure to hold the price down despite the price of crude oil in the run up to the elections? Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean everyone's not out to get you.

9. I'm in Chicago, and a station down the street is under $2.00!
Not downtown or Lincoln Park, though. It's still ridiculous there. I'm just happy to see it under $2.
