But you know what? the majority aren't.

Perhaps it's a generational gap...I've always believed good manners are more important than the money you have....

but remarks about your family do go way over the line, and you don't have to put up with them. As many have said, alert the mods when that happens. It's possible to disagree and even have arguments without resorting to personal attacks.

For me, the things that I learn on DU, the insights, the sharp wit and intelligence of most of its members, are worth the occasional flame war. Politics is a rough business, and this is a forum dedicated to politics at a time when our democracy is in serious peril. It's not surprising that there is a lot of infighting. I know that I'm a better person because of DU, and certainly much more informed. All of the people here give me hope for our country, even if sometimes we bicker with each other. Hopefully, you will get this out of DU as well. Hang in there!

Spend some time in The Lounge to salve your feelings. We are pretty mellow there. I have found most on DU to be incredibly kind, so just hang in there. It all depends on the forum that you choose. The Meeting Place is even more mellow than The Lounge, but political topics do come up in both places. You just have to find your place on DU, where you feel comfortable and become familiar. Mine is the Israeli/Palestinian Forum, which is the roughest on DU. It is the only place on DU that this topic can be discussed, it is so contentious. I feel the need to discuss this, since it is important to me, but I also take the occasional break. When I have returned, I have even been welcomed back, by those of varying opinions, a good feeling. I have spent a lot of time in The Lounge, lately. Nobody means to offend, unless they are real trolls or Freepers. This is just a very rough time for all of us, especially in the wake of that brutal week of the Republican Convention. Emotions run high. I also believe in good manners, and do my best. The rule is to attack the message, and not the messenger. If anyone ever attacks you, personally, then this is against the rules and you have every right to hit alert. The last time I kind of lost control was when someone posted a photo of Dick Cheney. I just can't look at that man. But I criticized Cheney and not the poster. Hang in there. We value you here.:-)

To all you new people and especially to the one who's only been here for a day and thinks it's "too evil" or something.

Rather than jump right in and start posting a lot of stuff, why not hang out and read for a while. Don't hit "reply" - just get a feel for the place, learn the mood, learn the lingo (just the other day, i learned one of the DU in jokes that I'd been hopelessly lost on).

A lot of these people have been posting to each other for a long time - they know each other and they joke and tease and jab. They don't have a lot of patience with someone who has few posts yet puts up things that could be taken as "freeper talking points" and I don't blame them because I've seen plenty of troll posts here.

Just relax, get to know the place and when you feel like you've got a decent perspective on it, ease into a discussion. Take it slow...

In this instance, though there were some posts the moderators removed, I think you're confusing hatred with differing opinions. Please forgive me if you think I'm being rude...I'm merely attempting to help you see this board for what it is.

While we aren't all Democrats, the initial intent of the website was to provide a supportive haven for members of the Democratic party. Therefore it stands to reason that criticism of John Kerry, Teresa, their kids, and any of the major players in the upcoming election will meet with intense rebuttal.

The more critical your statement, the more intense the response will be. You may in fact find that nobody agrees with you at all....at least, not strongly enough to say so. When that happens, the best thing to do is let it go and do what you can to push that thread closer to the archives.
